Attending were Professor Marino Xanthos, Research Professors Costas Gogos and Peng Wang of CBPE, Kwabena Narh, professor in NJIT's Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Linjie Zhu and Herman Suwardee of NJIT's Polymer Processing Institute (PPI), as well as five PhD students: Huiju Liu, who received his PhD degree this week; Jin Uk Ha, Qian Zheng, Min Yang, and Graciela Terife.  Peng Wang was the organizer, on behalf of the Otto H. York Department of Chemical, Biological and Pharmaceutical Engineering and PPI, of two special sessions on pharmaceutical hot melt extrusion. Six technical papers on research conducted on campus were presented by Wang, Gogos, Suwardee, Liu, Ha, and Terife. During the May 18 SPE awards ceremonies, Xanthos and Liu received the Heinz List Reactive Extrusion and the Professor Lew Erwin Outstanding Graduate Student Awards, respectively.

"This just confirms what we already know--that NJIT is truly a giving community that comes together to help those in need," said Campus Center Director Donna Minnich Spuhler. "Special thanks to all of the individuals who donated and raised funds, and to these groups who raised funds by hosting events: the NJIT Hockey Team for raising over $3,000 in their Hockey for Haiti Winter Classic game vs. Seton Hall; Engineers Without Borders; Phi Beta Sigma; OXFAM; HASAN; ASCE; Athletics, the Campus Center, Career Development Services; the cast of the Faculty, Staff and Student Variety Show, which raised $250; Gourmet Dining Services for their $1,000 contribution, and the Residence Hall Association."

NJIT EOP Students Take Second Place in 2009 ExxonMobil SME Bowl http://www.njit.edu/news/2008/2008-422.php http://www.njit.edu/news/2008/2008-422.phpWed, 19 Nov 2008 00:00:00 -0500 Felicia Amaechi, a senior majoring in biomedical engineering, and Karen Martinez, a junior majoring in chemical engineering, captured second place in the ExxonMobil Subject Matter Expert (SME) Bowl at the 2009 Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Conference on Nov. 8 in Baltimore. The SME Bowl is a competition with a "College Bowl" atmosphere where student teams representing the 10 SWE regions compete to answer engineering, math and science questions. Felicia and Karen, who are both in NJIT's Educational Opportunity Program, were part of a five-member team that included fellow region members from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Each team member received a $75 cash prize and $1500 for the region. Felicia is president of NJIT's SWE section and a Murray Women's Center Ambassador.

Named for the late NJIT professor and athletic director, the Bob Swanson Award is presented to the faculty or staff member who has shown continued support for the Highlander athletic program. AIChE at NJIT Receives Award for Outstanding Student Chapter   The NJIT student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) received an Outstanding Student Chapter award from the national organization. The awards are presented annually to those Student Chapters that show an exceptional level of participation, enthusiasm, program quality, professionalism, and involvement in the university and community. Humanities Professor Publishes Book on Founder of Macedonian Dynasty Norman Tobias, PhD, an associate professor in the department of humanities, has published Basil I, Founder of the Macedonian Dynasty: A Study of the Political and Military History of the Byzantine Empire in the Ninth Century (Mellen Press, 2007). The proposed initial project for the NJIT-EWB will be to provide a sustainable water supply and sanitation for the city of Milot in Haiti.

The Class of 2006 of 11 Honorary members will be inducted during the ASCE Annual Conference in October.Graduate Student Awarded a 2006 SPIE Educational Scholarship  Aysegul Ergin, a doctoral student in biomedical engineering at NJIT, was awarded an  Educational Scholarship in Optical Science & Engineering by SPIE-The International Society for Optical Engineering. The Scholarship Committee selected Ergin for her potential long-range contribution to the field of optics and photonics. Student Places Third in First Annual Electronic Trading Olympiad Yanzhi Bai, a graduate student in the College of Computing Sciences at NJIT, placed sixth in the first annual Electronic Trading Olympiad sponsored by the Interactive Brokers Group (IBG). IBG created the Olympiad to highlight the growing need for engineers and computer science professionals in the financial services industry.
