NJIT Earns Second Place in UNICEF-ACUI Campus Challenge To Raise Funds for Haiti Relief http://www.njit.edu/news/2010/2010-123.php http://www.njit.edu/news/2010/2010-123.phpThu, 15 Apr 2010 00:00:00 -0400 The NJIT community's efforts to help the victims of Haiti have earned second place in the UNICEF/ACUI Campus Challenge. NJIT raised $9,281.56 by April 1. The 300-plus schools that participated in the Campus Challenge raised over $230,000 which will be matched by the George Harrison Fund. "This just confirms what we already know--that NJIT is truly a giving community that comes together to help those in need," said Campus Center Director Donna Minnich Spuhler. "Special thanks to all of the individuals who donated and raised funds, and to these groups who raised funds by hosting events: the NJIT Hockey Team for raising over $3,000 in their Hockey for Haiti Winter Classic game vs. Seton Hall; Engineers Without Borders; Phi Beta Sigma; OXFAM; HASAN; ASCE; Athletics, the Campus Center, Career Development Services; the cast of the Faculty, Staff and Student Variety Show, which raised $250; Gourmet Dining Services for their $1,000 contribution, and the Residence Hall Association."

Architect at NJIT To Help Start Rebuilding Better Buildings in Haiti http://www.njit.edu/news/2010/2010-041.php http://www.njit.edu/news/2010/2010-041.phpTue, 16 Feb 2010 00:00:00 -0500 Rima Taher, a structural engineer at NJIT has accepted an invitation from Architecture for Humanity (AFH) to join architects and engineers creating a construction guide for rebuilding in earthquake and hurricane-prone areas. The guide would be used as a resource to builders as they begin their efforts in Haiti.  The manual will cover job site safety, dos and don'ts for earthquake and hurricane-resistant building and a list of appropriate/sustainable materials. It will be distributed for non-commercial use.

NJIT Engineers Help Clean Up Water Supply for Milot, Haiti http://www.njit.edu/news/2009/2009-236.php http://www.njit.edu/news/2009/2009-236.phpThu, 09 Jul 2009 00:00:00 -0400 More than a dozen NJIT civil and mechanical engineering students, faculty and interested staff members have spent the past three years working with villagers in a poor Haitian village to remove bacteria from their drinking water and halt water-borne illnesses.  Working under the auspices of Engineers Without Borders (EWB), the NJIT group has made four visits, to date, and are planning one last visit in October.
