The university will apply to the Secretary of Higher Education for $152 million from the Building Our Future Bond Act, state revolving funds and other sources to support the projects.

Yet while U.S. and Soviet spacecraft forced the world to look upward towards the Moon, they also, quite ironically, encouraged citizens across the globe to gaze back down at “spaceship Earth” with a newfound environmental awareness.

NJIT History Professor Awarded Verklin Program Fellowship http://www.njit.edu/news/2010/2010-276.php http://www.njit.edu/news/2010/2010-276.phpMon, 09 Aug 2010 00:00:00 -0400 Allison Perlman, PhD, an assistant professor in the Federated History Department, has been awarded a one-year research fellowship in the Verklin Program in Media Ethics and Policy at the University of Virginia. Dr. Perlman is the first research fellow in the Verklin Program, which intends to produce high-quality academic research on the ethics of media policy, the reciprocal relationship between the media and the law, and the political and social impact of media regulation. While at the University of Virginia, she will deliver two university-wide talks on her research and will present her research at the inaugural conference of the Verklin Program, which will be attended by the deans of the respective Annenberg Schools, the chair of the communications studies department of the University of Michigan, and other prominent media policy scholars. The fellowship also will support Dr. Perlman's completion of her book manuscript, Reforming Television: Media Activism, Media Policy, Media History. She will spend the 2010-2011 academic year in Charlottesville.

The film reconstructs the response of Newark’s black citizens and the actions of police and city leaders to the “Newark riots” of 1967 and also examines their subsequent influence on the life of NJ’s largest urban center. Filmmakers Marylou Tibaldo-Bongiorno and Jerome Bongiorno (at left) will attend the screening and participate in a discussion. Revolution ’67 has garnered accolades that include the 2008 John E. O’Connor Film Award of the American Historical Association; O’Connor, NJIT professor emeritus of history, will attend the screening.

Boswell was best known for his biography of Samuel Johnson. Sher’s research focuses on the thought and culture of 18th century Scotland.

Johnson, PhD, assistant professor in the department of humanities at NJIT, shows how archives available in local and state libraries across the U.S. can provide rich sources of technical communication history and examples of technical and business writing. In The Language of Work: Technical Communication at Lukens Steel, 1810 to 1925 (Baywood Publishing Company, Inc., 2009), Johnson explains that our predecessors eventually turned logs and notes into standardized texts and industry bibles, creating many of the types of information design that we use today. Henderson, president of PhoneTel Communications, Inc. and a member of the Albert Dorman Honors College Board of Visitors, assisted the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in the acquisition of two prototypes and related documentation for a pioneering wireless picturephone technology developed in 1993. Henderson recently was awarded six U.S. patents for innovation incorporated in the wireless system and device. The donation adds to a previous collection of wireless technology that Henderson donated to the museum’s Information Technology and Communications Division in 2003.
