NJIT Hosts Program to Discuss Brookings Report about Newark Manufacturing

NJIT Board of Trustees Approves Submission of Nearly $200 Million in Campus Construction and Infrastructure Projects in Response to State's RFPs

The Board of Trustees of New Jersey Institute of Technology has approved $200 million in construction and infrastructure projects on the university’s Newark campus, designed to enhance and expand NJIT’s role as the state’s science and technology university and a leader in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and research. The university will apply to the Secretary of Higher Education for $152 million from the Building Our Future Bond Act, state revolving funds and other sources to support the projects.

Students at the Union County Vocational-Technical Schools can now look forward to saving about one year of tuition and time if they choose to attend NJIT upon graduation from either the Union County Magnet High School or the Academy for Information Technology, thanks to an agreement signed today between NJIT President Robert A. Altenkirch and Union County Vocational-Technical Schools Superintendent Thomas J. Bistocchi. The program allows students entering their freshman year of high school to elect to take certain courses that NJIT faculty have pre-approved for credit. High school students who successfully complete all conditions of the program while in high school will be admitted to NJIT and can participate in a number of majors and colleges including offerings of the Newark College of Engineering, College of Science and Liberal Arts, the School of Management, the College of Computing Sciences and the Albert Dorman Honors College. “This is an exciting opportunity for students at the Academy and Magnet high schools and we are pleased to extend these offerings,” said Joel Bloom, vice president for Academic and Student Services at NJIT. Cell Phone Sculpture by Inventor Daniel Henderson Unveiled Today at NJIT

“The Brick,” a sculpture by Daniel A. Henderson, an inventor, entrepreneur, philanthropist and member of NJIT's Albert Dorman Honors College Board of Visitors, was unveiled today in the Fenster Hall lobby at NJIT. Completed in black Champlain marble and anodized aluminum, the sculpture was inspired by the world’s first portable cellular telephone: the Microtac 8000x. Henderson, who invented wireless picture and video messaging in 1993, said that his work was an example of taking a temporal medium—the plastic used to build cell phones—and putting it into a natural medium. “The point of this body of work is appropriate to NJIT,” he said. “We are proud of our research work in cell telephony and advances at this institution.” Shown at left are Henderson, NJIT President Robert A. NJIT Receives Challenge Grant To Fund Student Aid Program

NJIT has been awarded a $10,000 College Access Challenge Grant which will be matched by the university. The grant aims to increase outreach and opportunities for higher education access. The program assists needy New Jersey families at the start of the financial aid process, by among other things, most importantly helping them complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Honors Computer Lab Dedicated in Honor of Daniel A. Henderson

The Honors Computer Lab at the Albert Dorman Honors College, located on the fourth floor of Fenster Hall, was dedicated yesterday in honor of Daniel A. Henderson, president of PhoneTel Communications, Inc., a member of the Albert Dorman Honors College Board of Visitors and a long-time donor. Joel S. Bloom, EdD, vice president of academic and student services and dean of the Albert Dorman Honors College, took part in the plaque unveiling. The computer lab is reserved for Honors Scholars, a privilege that allows them to study in a setting with minimal distractions and in turn encourages cooperative group efforts for projects and learning. Earlier that morning Mr. Henderson shared his experiences as a highly successful inventor, a sculptor and the founder of several thriving companies at The Lloyd M. Felmly Colloquium.

Harris Award of Excellence for 2008. The award is given annually to one who “exemplifies the characteristics of the person for whom the award is named, including his contributions to students, the College Board and the field of education in general.” Bloom will be presented with the award on Feb. 14 during the Middle States Regional Forum at the Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center.

William S. Guttenberg ’44 Gives $1 Million for Endowed Scholarship As Part of the Albert Dorman Honors College Campaign

New Jersey students who are physically challenged have additional opportunities to pursue higher education thanks to a $1 million gift from an NJIT alumnus, William S. Guttenberg, who has continually demonstrated his dedication to physically challenged young people and to NJIT through his generosity. Yesterday Guttenberg ’44 signed a revised scholarship agreement for an additional $1 million to endow scholarships primarily for physically challenged students, students from Paterson, NJ and other urban centers, students who lost a parent in the September 11th terrorist attacks, and Honors College students. A successful entrepreneur and decorated World War II veteran, Guttenberg credited NJIT with giving him the tools to succeed. “I’d just like everyone else to have the same opportunities as I had,” he said. Bill has previously given comparable gifts and has his name is on NJIT’s largest academic building, the William Guttenberg Information Technology Center. Signing the agreement are from left: Joel S. Tremaine Designated Professor Emeritus; Receives CHI Lifetime Service Award Marilyn Tremaine, PhD, professor of information systems, was designated Professor Emeritus effective February 1, 2005, in recognition of her service to the university and her continuing involvement with its students. In addition, Tremaine received the 2005 Lifetime Service Award from the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI). The CHI Lifetime Service Award is given to individuals who have contributed to the growth of SIGCHI in a variety of capacities and carries an honorarium of $1,000. Student Section of Society of Women Engineers Receives Award at National Conference The NJIT student section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) was honored with the Student Net Increase Award for Medium Sections at this year’s national SWE conference. The NJIT SWE achieved an 86% increase in student members over the past year. Also, NJIT SWE student section president Chisom Madiuke served as a member of the Region E team during the conference "SME Bowl" competition. The Subject Matter Expert (SME) Bowl, sponsored by ExxonMobil, is a competition that challenges SWE students in their knowledge of science, math, physics, engineering, and technology as well as SWE history, policies, and procedures. The region won first prize, netting a $1,500 team award for region programming. Bloom Appointed to Mathematics Task Force Joel S.
