NJIT Awards 2,643 Degrees to Members of the Class of 2013 at Prudential Center

With woops, cheers and mortarboards flying, NJIT today awarded 2,643 degrees to the members of the class of 2013. This brings the total number of degrees awarded by the university to more than 74,678. The ceremony was held at Newark’s Prudential Center.

NJIT Board of Trustees Approves Submission of Nearly $200 Million in Campus Construction and Infrastructure Projects in Response to State's RFPs

The Board of Trustees of New Jersey Institute of Technology has approved $200 million in construction and infrastructure projects on the university’s Newark campus, designed to enhance and expand NJIT’s role as the state’s science and technology university and a leader in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and research. The university will apply to the Secretary of Higher Education for $152 million from the Building Our Future Bond Act, state revolving funds and other sources to support the projects.

The NJIT Center for Pre-College Programs hosted the event, thanks to Netflix prize money won by a team led by Bell and Volinsky and donated last year to NJIT by AT&T. Teachers walked away with teaching ideas, plus Lego Mind Storm sets to continue building robots back in their classrooms. “My kids are going to be so excited that we now have this kit,” said Rich Bettini, a technology teacher at West Essex High School, North Caldwell, who participated in the learning session. Conference organizer Howard Kimmel, director of the NJIT Center, said that robots were a great way to introduce science and math materials in a multi-disciplinary way to students. “When you design a robot you also teach algebra,” he said. “We also love them because they are a hands-on learning tool, something which always enhances learning.”

Distinguished Professors Emerita To Conduct Research in Madrid

University Carlos III of Madrid has selected NJIT Distinguished Professor Emerita Starr Roxanne Hiltz as the holder of a "Chair of Excellence" for the 2010-2011 academic year. She will be working on human-computer interaction research related to Emergency Response Information Systems. Murray Turoff, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of NJIT's Information Systems Department, will accompany her as a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Informatics, teaching a course and conducting research with the Interactive Systems Group. .

Beginning on May 24, NJIT's Division of Continuing Professional Education will offer four non-credit professional development programs in iPhone and iPad Application Development; Solar Panel Installation Training; Underground Storage Tank Regulation Review; and Open Source Unix Certification. All of these courses are open to the general public and will help NJ residents obtain new skills to seek and keep jobs.

NJIT Receives More than $23 Million in Recovery Funds To Facilitate Use of Electronic Health Records by 2014

The White House announced yesterday that New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will receive more than $23 million of the $2 billion allocated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to achieve widespread meaningful use of health IT and facilitate use of an electronic health record (EHR) by every person by the year 2014.

High School Web Designers Compete Today at NJIT

Teams of 3-4 students representing more than 43 New York and New Jersey high schools will participate today in NJIT's Fifth Annual Web Design Competition. NJIT's Information Systems Department, Office of Technology Development and the NSF-funded ADVANCE Project will co-sponsor an interdisciplinary, cross-sector seminar on text-mining and research networks on March 8, 11:30 am-1:30 p.m. (followed by discussion) in the GITC Building, Room 3710. "Automated Discovery of Emerging Online Communities and Research Networks: New Tools and Techniques from Academia and Industry" will feature presentations by Anatoliy Gruzd, PhD (pictured), assistant professor in the School of Information Management at Dalhousie University; and Sheldon Sloan, MD, MBE, vice president of policy, Johnson & Johnson Corporate Office of Science and Technology. Lunch will be provided.

Globetrotting Distinguished Professors Emeriti

Distinguished Professors Emeriti Starr Roxanne Hiltz and Murray Turoff of NJIT's Information Systems Department are spending the month of January as visiting professors at the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii. In October they participated as invited keynoters at a workshop on the Future of Higher Education in Romania, held in Bucharest. In November, a visit to Finland included invited presentations by Hiltz on "The Impact of Online Learning and Social Media on Higher Education" at the Finnish Society for Futures Studies, Helsinki; and "Social Media: Characteristics, Social Issues, and Use in Marketing," at the Turku School of Economics. Turoff's invited presentations included: "Emergency Response Information Systems" at Nokia in Helsinki, and a keynote address on the Delphi Method at the annual Millennium Project meeting in Helsinki. "These are exactly the kinds of opportunities we hoped to have when we transitioned to emeritus and emerita status," said Hiltz. "It is quite wonderful to be able to work with colleagues all over the world."
