Altenkirch addressed student teams representing 30 New Jersey public and private high schools last week at the 2010 Panasonic Creative Design Challenge finals at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. For this year's challenge, teams designed and built a remote-controlled robotic recycling plant to help sort through debris in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. NJIT makes significant contributions to this science and engineering technology competition: Three NJIT student interns develop the Challenge, while NJIT staff score the written reports as well as provide judges for the performance and oral presentations.

Since 1991, NJIT has partnered with Panasonic in the competition sponsored by the company, which tests many skills as high school teams vie for college scholarships and other prizes.

The NJIT research professor would like the pharmaceutical industry to adopt safer, greener, more efficient and more effective manufacturing processes. Last week Watts brought his crusade down to the grass roots level at a five-day workshop at which 16 faculty from universities around the nation developed ways to encourage their students to pursue careers in the pharmaceutical industry so this new way of thinking can flourish.
