Sebastian, interim provost and senior vice president for research and development and Judith Sheft, associate vice president for technology development, were awarded the title of Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Commerce and International Relations by the Universidad Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (UIGV) in Lima, Peru. They were invited by Daniel Jara on behalf of the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of NJ (SHCC), which co-hosted the First USA-Peru Trade & Investment Forum Peruvian Products Exhibition. The event marked the beginning of an international initiative designed to help bring awareness as well as to showcase selected products of Peru, international trade opportunities, and the information necessary to trade internationally to SHCC members. “The objective is for NJIT to form a relationship with UIGV to help them develop incubation and extension programs that can move the country's economy from one of exporting raw materials to one that captures more of the value chain,” said Sebastian.

Altenkirch remembered Knox as an exceptionally dedicated administrator, teacher, colleague and sports enthusiast whose legacy continues in the lives of the numerous students he mentored in his 25 years at NJIT.

NJIT Community Mourns Passing of Associate Provost Dana E. Knox, PhD, professor of chemical engineering in the Otto H. York Department of Chemical, Biological and Pharmaceutical Engineering and Associate Provost for Undergraduate Programs at NJIT, on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008 at home. He was 53. Born in Mineola, NY, he lived in Troy, NY and Iselin before moving to Edison in 1995. He received his BS, MS and PhD degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic University. He received the Franzosini Award from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry in appreciation of his continuous contribution to the Solubility Data Project. Dr. Knox was serving as the chairman of the Subcommittee on Solubility and Equilibrium Data for IUPAC and was extremely active in the American Institute of Chemical Engineering, often organizing and chairing sessions at the National Meeting. He was also a frequent contributor to annual meetings of ASEE. An avid sports enthusiast, he once coached the Ice Hockey Club at NJIT and also enjoyed soccer, golf and racquetball. He was beloved as a colleague across the NJIT campus as a dedicated advisor for many students who received their degrees from NJIT; this year he would have celebrated his 25-year anniversary at the university. He was currently serving as co-advisor for NJIT's Student Chapter of AICHE. He received awards for excellence in teaching and for excellence in advising from the Newark College of Engineering. In 1994, Dr. Knox received the university-wide Robert W. Van Houten Award bestowed by NJIT alumni to recognize teaching excellence. In 2002, he was appointed to the rank of Master Teacher at NJIT. Surviving is his wife; Petra; and a sister, Laura Matthews of Plattsburgh, NY. A Blessing will be held on Monday, Sept. 29, 2008 at 10 a.m. at the Gosselin Funeral Home, 660 New Dover Road, Edison, followed by Interment at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia. Visitation: Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers or other expressions of condolences, and as a tribute to Dr. Knox's commitment to education and to the NJIT community, donations to the Dr. Dana E. The Class of 2006 of 11 Honorary members will be inducted during the ASCE Annual Conference in October.Graduate Student Awarded a 2006 SPIE Educational Scholarship  Aysegul Ergin, a doctoral student in biomedical engineering at NJIT, was awarded an  Educational Scholarship in Optical Science & Engineering by SPIE-The International Society for Optical Engineering. The Scholarship Committee selected Ergin for her potential long-range contribution to the field of optics and photonics. Student Places Third in First Annual Electronic Trading Olympiad Yanzhi Bai, a graduate student in the College of Computing Sciences at NJIT, placed sixth in the first annual Electronic Trading Olympiad sponsored by the Interactive Brokers Group (IBG). IBG created the Olympiad to highlight the growing need for engineers and computer science professionals in the financial services industry.

Van Buskirk, PhD, PE, has announced that he will resign his position as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at New Jersey Institute of Technology, effective June 30, 2004, to return to teaching and research as a distinguished professor in the department of biomedical engineering.  He has served in his current role for nearly the past six years. Dr. Van Buskirk informed President Robert A. Altenkirch that he has enjoyed immensely the opportunity to be a part of NJIT's administrative team and that it has been a great privilege to serve as the chief academic officer of one of the most highly regarded technological research universities in the nation.
