NJIT Graduate Student - Wins Academic Award in Catalent Institute Global Life Science Competition

NJIT doctoral student Maxx Capece was awarded one of three, $2,000 first place prizes in a competition sponsored by the Catalent Institute. His winning submission entitled, “Modified Release of Dry-Polymer Coated Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients,” provided a review of applications of dry-polymer control release drug delivery technologies on the particulate scale.

NJIT’s Elisha Yegal Bar-Ness Center for Wireless Communications and Signal Processing Research recently showcased the research of eight doctoral students. The students’ work was featured in presentations and posters displayed in the area. The annual event aims to give doctoral students and their professors from the center a chance to exchange information from a year’s worth of work. The Center is located in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NJIT’s Newark College of Engineering.

NJIT Students Study Better Ways to Manage Elizabeth, Perth Amboy Waterfronts

A handful of NJIT engineering and architecture student volunteers hope to better understand what happened to the storm-damaged public waterfront areas in Elizabeth and Perth Amboy. Earlier this week, working with Future City Inc., the students conducted physical assessments of the damaged waterfronts. Policymakers and constituents met with them. Tomorrow and Friday, they’ll be brainstorming solutions and writing impact assessments. Professional engineers will be available to listen. The exercise is bound to not only help the cities but instill pride in the volunteers. They also may walk away a lot smarter. Among the issues to be addressed: Can a living waterfront be integrated into the locality's flood management plan? And, if so where? How best to manage the impact of flooding and related damages? And what about future public access, considering climate change?

How innovation districts can foster economic growth will be the focus of an upcoming panel, moderated by NJIT Senior Vice President of Research and Development Donald H. Sebastian at the 2013 Redevelopment Forum. The event, sponsored by New Jersey Future, is set for March 1, 2013 in New Brunswick. Other NJIT speakers will include College of Architecture and Design Dean Urs Gauchat, examining how new construction can “fit” into often delicate existing fabrics. Colette Santasieri, director of strategic initiatives at NJIT, will sit on a third panel, addressing the tensions between port operations and redevelopments for nonindustrial/nonport related issues.

A delegation from Ningguo in the People’s Republic of China will visit NJIT Nov. 18, 2010 to learn more about sustainable urban living and solar energy. The delegation would like to transform Ningguo into China’s “Solar City.” The trip follows a visit this past July from an NJIT delegation led by Donald H. Sebastian, PhD, senior vice president for research and development, in which an agreement was signed with city officials to help them achieve their solar goals. Ningguo is located in eastern China in the province of Anhui. The city has a population of 380,000.

New Composite Material Made From Recycled Glass Takes Honor at NJIT

Paul Rodriguez, of Harrison, a graduating senior at NJIT, received honorable mention at the NJIT Dana Knox Student Research Showcase on April 14, 2010, for his research project to develop a composite material made entirely from recycled glass and plastics as a replacement for concrete masonry blocks.

Brian Novello, of Rockaway Township, Receives NJIT Top Honor for Research

Brian Novello, of Rockaway Township, a graduating fifth year student in the NJIT Bachelor of Architecture Degree Program, has received the third place bronze medal from NJIT for his inventive design to create docking stations in rivers to harness clean energy. The honor was awarded at the NJIT Dana Knox Provost Research Day competition on April 14, 2010.
