SWE Ends Semester With Outreach Event and Annual Banquet

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) recently hosted a “Wow! That’s Engineering!” outreach event titled “Innovation through Imagination.” The event, funded by a grant from ExxonMobil, hosted 55 students from the seventh grade class of the Newark Early College High School (NECHS) and six of their chaperones.

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) at NJIT has recently been awarded a grant to support their continued goal of increasing the number of women studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The award, funded by ExxonMobil, is part of the national SWE grant competition for K-12 (pre-college) outreach programs.

Dora Maria Abreu, assistant vice president and senior business analyst for the global technology integration group of Pershing LLC, will moderate a panel of successful female business executives, engineers and architects. NJIT EOP Students Take Second Place in 2009 ExxonMobil SME Bowl

Felicia Amaechi, a senior majoring in biomedical engineering, and Karen Martinez, a junior majoring in chemical engineering, captured second place in the ExxonMobil Subject Matter Expert (SME) Bowl at the 2009 Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Conference on Nov. 8 in Baltimore. The SME Bowl is a competition with a "College Bowl" atmosphere where student teams representing the 10 SWE regions compete to answer engineering, math and science questions. Felicia and Karen, who are both in NJIT's Educational Opportunity Program, were part of a five-member team that included fellow region members from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Each team member received a $75 cash prize and $1500 for the region. Felicia is president of NJIT's SWE section and a Murray Women’s Center Ambassador.

NJIT To Graduate Inspiring Late-Bloomer on Second Career Who Can Do It All

Maureen Sturgeon, a non-traditional, adult student who is on her second career, may be the most industrious student to graduate May 17, 2007, from NJIT. Sturgeon will graduate with an almost-perfect grade-point average, while holding down a full-time job as the engineering inspector for Franklin Township.

Society for Women Engineers Organizes Cell Phone Drive for Tsunami Victims

The Society for Women Engineers at NJIT will be conducting a cell phone drive during the months of February and March. Cell phones can be dropped off at designated boxes located around campus, including the Campus Center, Campbell Hall, and the residential halls. Funds raised from the drive will go to the American Red Cross to aid victims of the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia.

Tremaine Designated Professor Emeritus; Receives CHI Lifetime Service Award Marilyn Tremaine, PhD, professor of information systems, was designated Professor Emeritus effective February 1, 2005, in recognition of her service to the university and her continuing involvement with its students. In addition, Tremaine received the 2005 Lifetime Service Award from the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI). The CHI Lifetime Service Award is given to individuals who have contributed to the growth of SIGCHI in a variety of capacities and carries an honorarium of $1,000. Student Section of Society of Women Engineers Receives Award at National Conference The NJIT student section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) was honored with the Student Net Increase Award for Medium Sections at this year’s national SWE conference. The NJIT SWE achieved an 86% increase in student members over the past year. Also, NJIT SWE student section president Chisom Madiuke served as a member of the Region E team during the conference "SME Bowl" competition. The Subject Matter Expert (SME) Bowl, sponsored by ExxonMobil, is a competition that challenges SWE students in their knowledge of science, math, physics, engineering, and technology as well as SWE history, policies, and procedures. The region won first prize, netting a $1,500 team award for region programming. Bloom Appointed to Mathematics Task Force Joel S. Bloom, interim provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at NJIT, was appointed to the Governor's Mathematics Task Force.
