No one has ever done anything like this before,” said lead researcher Somenath Mitra, PhD, professor and acting chair of NJIT’s Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science.

NJIT Chemists Modify Carbon Nanotubes Using Microwaves http://www.njit.edu/news/2005/2005-106.php http://www.njit.edu/news/2005/2005-106.phpThu, 17 Mar 2005 00:00:00 -0500 Researchers at NJIT have discovered a novel method of changing the chemical characteristics of carbon nanotubes by heating them in a closed vessel microwave oven. Somenath Mitra, PhD (at left) and Zafar Iqbal, PhD, both professors of chemistry and environmental sciences, will discuss their findings on March 17 from 8:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. at the 229th national meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Diego. “We understand ourselves to be the first in the world to have discovered this method,” said Mitra. “The beauty is that our method is green and clean.”
