A Bright Idea: Residence Life Green Team at NJIT Joins Forces with Project Porchlight

The Residence Life Green Team at NJIT joined forces with Project Porchlight last month to educate NJIT students on the energy savings offered by compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. Sixteen volunteers helped Project Porchlight distribute a total of 314 CFL bulbs throughout Redwood and Cypress Halls. The CFL bulb distribution was part of Project Porchlight New Jersey’s campaign to distribute energy-efficient light bulbs to residents across the state. “The distribution was a really great experience for the Green Team volunteers,” said NJIT residence coordinator Mark Bullock. “A lot of people talk about helping the environment, but the Green Team actually got a chance to do something about it.”

The Changing Face of NJIT: Largest Freshman Class Ever; High SAT Scores

The class of 2013—with nearly 1,000 students—is the largest freshman class ever to enter NJIT. The overall enrollment of nearly 9,000 students is second largest in university history. But it’s not just class size that’s impressive. There’s been an 11 point rise in composite SAT scores to 1143. The national composite is 1016.

Essex County College President Delivers Keynote Speech at University Convocation

Essex County College President A. Zachary Yamba, EdD delivered the keynote address yesterday at the annual University Convocation, which recognized faculty, staff and student accomplishments. Yamba, who was one of the early founders of a partnership that has enabled ECC and NJIT, Rutgers-Newark and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey to collaborate on numerous collegiate and community initiatives in the city's University Heights district, discussed the role of education in the revitalization of Newark. "Newark is our home–and home to many of our students," said Yamba. "We must be active participants in the unfolding of its future."

Corzine recognizing the university and Panasonic “for their continued commitment to developing the creative thinking and technical skills of New Jersey’s students.” NJIT student interns help to design the Panasonic Creative Design Challenge, with NJIT faculty and staff serving as judges. Since 1991, NJIT has partnered with Panasonic in the competition sponsored by the company, which tests many skills as high school teams vie for college scholarships and other prizes.

An estimated 3,000 students, faculty, staff, alumni and their families participated in NJIT Day 2008, the university's annual fall festival, on October 11. Highlights of this year's event, which recorded the largest attendance in its five-year history, included carnival rides and game booths, The Young Alumni Club Chili Cook-off, women's soccer, Highlander Games, and computer game expo. "It was, by far, the largest event we have held on campus excepting commencement," said NJIT Dean of Students Jack Gentul. "So many people worked so hard to make the event a success—their efforts and the outcome has made us all proud to be a part of this community."

NJIT’s Miniversity Program Helps First-Year Students Make Connections, Ease Transition from High School to College

Incoming first-year students took part in a two-day interactive overnight orientation this week as part of NJIT’s Connections Miniversity Program. Students are given the opportunity to meet with advisors and receive guidance on academic planning. Beyond the academic orientation, students participate in activities that help orient them to community life and the diverse resources in and around Newark. Lead Coordinators for the 2008 Miniversity are Michael Lawson, of Parsippany, a junior majoring in architecture and Nicole Mavropoulos, of Livingston, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering.

Tiffany Small, systems manager of NJIT's Office of International Students and Faculty (OIS&F), served as the program chair for the fsaATLAS track for the March 2007 SunGard Summit conference. This is only the second year that SunGard Higher Education has had a track solely dedicated to its fsaATLAS software, used by OIS&F and the Office of University Admissions to report international student and exchange visitor data to the Department of Homeland Security. As a result of her efforts, the number and variety of fsaATLAS sessions increased, as well as the number of session attendees.

Annual Dean's Day Event A Great Success Despite Spring Storm

William S. Guttenberg ’44 Gives $1 Million for Endowed Scholarship As Part of the Albert Dorman Honors College Campaign

New Jersey students who are physically challenged have additional opportunities to pursue higher education thanks to a $1 million gift from an NJIT alumnus, William S. Guttenberg, who has continually demonstrated his dedication to physically challenged young people and to NJIT through his generosity. Yesterday Guttenberg ’44 signed a revised scholarship agreement for an additional $1 million to endow scholarships primarily for physically challenged students, students from Paterson, NJ and other urban centers, students who lost a parent in the September 11th terrorist attacks, and Honors College students. A successful entrepreneur and decorated World War II veteran, Guttenberg credited NJIT with giving him the tools to succeed. “I’d just like everyone else to have the same opportunities as I had,” he said. Bill has previously given comparable gifts and has his name is on NJIT’s largest academic building, the William Guttenberg Information Technology Center. Signing the agreement are from left: Joel S. Students Graduate Today from EOP Boot Camp at NJIT

Graduation Day arrives today for 180 academic boot campers who have completed the six-week Educational Opportunity Program at NJIT. The students, all of whom will now be formally admitted into NJIT’s incoming freshman class, spent six weeks living in residence halls and attending classes in math and science. The program, now in its 33rd year, takes high school students from the state’s poorest districts and transforms them into bright college students who will one day work as engineers, scientists and other professionals.

Thirty Albert Dorman Honors College students were inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society at NJIT, which recognizes outstanding academic achievement among members of the freshman class. In addition, Shane Y. Williamson, assistant dean for academics, was inducted as an honorary member for her assistance to Honors College freshmen. NJIT Chemistry Professor Presents Research at International Symposium
Dr. Lev N. Krasnoperov, a professor in the department of chemistry and environmental science at NJIT, in collaboration with Jingping Peng and Paul Marshall of the University of North Texas, has made an important advancement in the theory of reactions that exhibit negative apparent activation energies. In their paper entitled "Modified Transition State Theory and Negative Activation Energies of Simple Metathesis Reactions: Application to the Reaction CH3+HBr -> CH4 + Br," which appeared in the Journal of Physical Chemistry Analysis in March 2006, they developed a modified transition state theory (MTST) for such reactions that provided quantitative agreement with the experiment. In addition to the published journal article, Dr. Krasnoperov recently presented this research at the 19th International Symposium on Gas Kinetics in Orleans, France, July 22-27, 2006.

The Day In The Life Foundation, which introduces high school students to the working world through its Day in the Life Series of professional experiences, presented a conversation and discussion on the plight of young black men in America with actor and author Hill Harper on May 25 at NJIT. Harper, who appears on the television drama CSI:NY, offered words of inspiration and encouragement to the audience of more than 300 young men in the Newark Public School system and from Union, Elizabeth, West Orange and Baltimore who attended the forum.

NJIT Students Take First and Third Place in ASME Mechanical Engineering CompetitionNJIT continued its run of success at the annual American Society of Mechanical Engineers Regional Student Conference on April 1, 2006 at Fairleigh Dickinson University. For the eighth time in the last eleven years, NJIT mechanical engineering students captured first place in the National Student Design Contest. The design involved the development of a prototype device for cast fishing for a quadriplegic using sip and puff technology. The winning team of John Kurdyla and Alejandro Perez will represent ASME Region II at the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) in Chicago in November. NJIT’s team of Eric Jakubik and Eric Shapiro also honored the university with a third-place finish in the contest.

A group of 50 students from NJIT’s New Jersey School of Architecture will spend spring break cleaning out houses in a flood-ravaged neighborhood in New Orleans. "Helping people rebuild their houses, and their lives, is an amazing feeling and a great experience,” says Thomas Reynolds, a senior at NJIT who helped organize the trip. “I’d much rather spend my vacation helping these people than sitting on a beach in Florida.”
