NJIT's Mengchu Zhou Proposes Using Petri Nets as a Solution to Automation Problems in Manufacturing in Upcoming IEEE Journal

NJIT Awards 2,643 Degrees to Members of the Class of 2013 at Prudential Center

NJIT Board of Trustees Approves Submission of Nearly $200 Million in Campus Construction and Infrastructure Projects in Response to State's RFPs

The Board of Trustees of New Jersey Institute of Technology has approved $200 million in construction and infrastructure projects on the university’s Newark campus, designed to enhance and expand NJIT’s role as the state’s science and technology university and a leader in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and research. The university will apply to the Secretary of Higher Education for $152 million from the Building Our Future Bond Act, state revolving funds and other sources to support the projects.

NJIT professors and alumni will be among the innovators honored this evening at the 22nd Annual New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame Awards ceremony in Hoboken. Timothy Chang, PhD, distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, will receive a Special Award for his achievements in the areas of ultra-high precision systems, genetic systems, robotics and motion control; and Yun-Qing Shi, PhD, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will be recognized for his work in digital forensics and security. Jingjing Zhang, a PhD candidate in NJIT's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will receive the Graduate Student Award. Vikki Hazelwood, PhD, who received her MS from NJIT in 1998, will receive the Advancement of Invention Award for a pioneering process for translational research in medicine and Richard Caizza, who received a certificate in plastics technology from NJIT in 1992, will receive the Inventor of the Year award for his "Single-Handedly Actuatable Safety Shield for Needles" patent.

Distinguished Professors Emeriti Starr Roxanne Hiltz and Murray Turoff of NJIT's Information Systems Department are spending the month of January as visiting professors at the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii. In October they participated as invited keynoters at a workshop on the Future of Higher Education in Romania, held in Bucharest. In November, a visit to Finland included invited presentations by Hiltz on "The Impact of Online Learning and Social Media on Higher Education" at the Finnish Society for Futures Studies, Helsinki; and "Social Media: Characteristics, Social Issues, and Use in Marketing," at the Turku School of Economics. Turoff's invited presentations included: "Emergency Response Information Systems" at Nokia in Helsinki, and a keynote address on the Delphi Method at the annual Millennium Project meeting in Helsinki. "These are exactly the kinds of opportunities we hoped to have when we transitioned to emeritus and emerita status," said Hiltz. "It is quite wonderful to be able to work with colleagues all over the world."

Students from India's Heritage Institute Gain Hands-On Training at NJIT's Summer Research Experience Symposium

NJIT conducted a summer research program in partnership with the Heritage Institute of Technology (HITK) in Kolkata, India. The 20 students enrolled in NJIT’s Undergraduate Research Experience Symposium were able to participate in a state-of-the-art research facility with world-class faculty. They were accompanied by Srabanti Basu, a senior lecturer in biotechnology at HITK. The program was initiated and managed by Durga Misra, PhD, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NJIT, who also encouraged the participation of faculty and the Albert Dorman Honors College students who mentored the HITK students after hours in their residence hall. “The Summer Research Experience is a rare opportunity to receive hands-on training with NJIT professors and students at the university’s facilities,” said Misra. “A group of three students worked in NJIT’s new Vincent A. Stabile Systems Engineering and Management Laboratories to gain experience with the Stabile Laboratories’ Festo System.” Student research projects included low-power microchip design, drug delivery systems, nanoelectronics, ultrafiltration to scalable web search, clean slate Internet design and management systems analysis.

Tiffany Small, systems manager of NJIT's Office of International Students and Faculty (OIS&F), served as the program chair for the fsaATLAS track for the March 2007 SunGard Summit conference. This is only the second year that SunGard Higher Education has had a track solely dedicated to its fsaATLAS software, used by OIS&F and the Office of University Admissions to report international student and exchange visitor data to the Department of Homeland Security. As a result of her efforts, the number and variety of fsaATLAS sessions increased, as well as the number of session attendees.

NJIT Graduation Speaker Touts Text Messaging To Improve Emergency Response

Volunteers from grassroots organizations are often the first to respond in a local emergency. These first responders often do not have adequate training and practice with quick-response tactics and mobile two-way device usage. Elizabeth Avery Gomez, who will graduate on Thursday from NJIT with a doctorate in information systems, has devoted much of her research to changing this situation. She will speak about her research during NJIT’s graduation ceremony on May 17.
