Wells Fargo Awards NJIT $50,000 to Improve Teaching Math in Middle School

Wells Fargo has awarded a grant of $50,000 to the NJIT Center for Pre-College Programs to further the bank’s commitment to improving the teaching of mathematics in New Jersey middle schools. NJIT Graduate Student - Wins Academic Award in Catalent Institute Global Life Science Competition

NJIT doctoral student Maxx Capece was awarded one of three, $2,000 first place prizes in a competition sponsored by the Catalent Institute. His winning submission entitled, “Modified Release of Dry-Polymer Coated Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients,” provided a review of applications of dry-polymer control release drug delivery technologies on the particulate scale.

NJIT Swarm Lab Hosts Conference for Northeast Researchers Studying Social Insects

He serves as chief operating officer of the company and is the head of its portfolio management activities. NJIT Mathematician Publishes 2013 Major League Baseball Projections

Over the years, Bukiet has applied mathematical analysis to compute the number of regular season games each Major League Baseball team should win. Though his expertise is in mathematical modeling, his projections have compared well with those of so-called experts.

NJIT Students Study Better Ways to Manage Elizabeth, Perth Amboy Waterfronts

A handful of NJIT engineering and architecture student volunteers hope to better understand what happened to the storm-damaged public waterfront areas in Elizabeth and Perth Amboy. Earlier this week, working with Future City Inc., the students conducted physical assessments of the damaged waterfronts. Policymakers and constituents met with them. Tomorrow and Friday, they’ll be brainstorming solutions and writing impact assessments. Professional engineers will be available to listen. The exercise is bound to not only help the cities but instill pride in the volunteers. They also may walk away a lot smarter. Among the issues to be addressed: Can a living waterfront be integrated into the locality's flood management plan? And, if so where? How best to manage the impact of flooding and related damages? And what about future public access, considering climate change?

Two Dozen Athletes Help Newark Non-Profit Still Hurting from Hurricane

Some 25 members of NJIT’s men’s track and field team will volunteer their brawn and brains tomorrow to tackle cleaning up the headquarters of IHS Development Corporation, Newark. Ravaged by hurricanes Sandy and Irene, the building remains in need of help and students’ efforts. Volunteers will remove light debris, lift moderate boxes and materials and perform minor carpentry repairs. The students are part of a larger 600-body task force assembled during the past month by NJIT’s College of Architecture and Design (COAD). Dubbed the “Alternative Spring Break,” the effort has targeted cleaning up facilities, residences and areas damaged by the super storm. Students from other colleges and universities are also participating.

WHAT: During Alternative Spring Break, over 500 NJIT students, faculty, staff and alumni will do volunteer work from Newark to the Jersey shore, cleaning up devastated areas and helping towns rebuild in a resilient manner. Students will work on removing debris from beaches and parks, removing floors and wallboard, replacing floors and walls, painting and carpentry, stocking and distributing food and clothing, and compiling information on areas affected by Sandy.

NJIT Board of Trustees Approves Submission of Nearly $200 Million in Campus Construction and Infrastructure Projects in Response to State's RFPs

The Board of Trustees of New Jersey Institute of Technology has approved $200 million in construction and infrastructure projects on the university’s Newark campus, designed to enhance and expand NJIT’s role as the state’s science and technology university and a leader in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and research. The university will apply to the Secretary of Higher Education for $152 million from the Building Our Future Bond Act, state revolving funds and other sources to support the projects.

NJIT Doctoral Student Receives Louis Berger International Scholar Award

Xiaolu Wang, of Newark, a doctoral student at NJIT, was named the 2013 recipient of The Louis Berger International Scholar Award on Feb. 13, 2013. Wang will receive a stipend of approximately $19,500 to cover tuition and living costs. In 1997, The Louis Berger Group, Inc. established the Louis Berger International Scholar program at NJIT. To date, the program has provided scholarships to nine NJIT students.

The material, best known as AAC, has been heralded as the building material of the new millennium. It’s a lightweight, easily-crafted manufactured stone, strong enough to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes when reinforced with steel.

NJ-HITEC Ranked First in the Nation in Assisting Physicians Implement Health Information Technology

The New Jersey Health Information Technology Extension Center (NJ-HITEC) is ranked first nationally among the 62 Regional Extension Centers with over 6,300 member Primary Care Providers (PCPs), including 4,600 PCPs who are using a government certified Electronic Health Record (EHR) system in their practice and 1,432 who have met the federal EHR program’s requirements to receive incentive payments.

Farrow, PhD, who with his research team have discovered how to make nanoscale arrays of the world’s smallest probe for investigating the electrical properties of individual living cells was awarded yesterday, Oct. 4, 2012, the NJIT Board of Overseers Excellence in Research Prize and Medal. This prize is the most prestigious research award at NJIT. It is the fifth time the award has been made.

NJIT Mathematician Receives NSF Grant To Study Interaction of Skin and Surfactants

NJIT Associate Professor Yuan-Nan Young has been awarded a three-year, $212,000 National Science Foundation grant to mathematically model how surfactants interact with the skin’s lipid bi-layer. A surfactant, also known as a wetting or surface-acting agent, breaks the surface tension of a liquid to create more contact with another substance. Soap is the best-known surfactant.
