The Honors Student Council Office located on the fourth floor of NJIT’s Fenster Hall was officially named The Roberta Renard Student Council Office at the Albert Dorman Honors College (ADHC) yesterday in honor of the ADHC Board of Visitors member and benefactor. Roberta Renard, of Summit, is president and chief executive officer of Renard Communications, Inc., a Springfield, NJ company that publishes the trade magazine, Diversity/Careers in Engineering & Information Technology. >>

Joel Bloom, vice president for academic and student services and dean, Albert Dorman Honors College, Charles R. Dees, Jr., vice president for university advancement, and Dick Sweeney '82, co-inventor of the Keurig single-cup coffee machine, recently participated in a coffee “cupping" session at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters in Waterbury, Vermont. Green Mountain and its partner Simatelex, in China, the manufacturer of the Keurig single-cup coffee maker, have endowed a $100,000 scholarship at NJIT. >>

“The Brick,” a sculpture by Daniel A. Henderson, an inventor, entrepreneur, philanthropist and member of NJIT's Albert Dorman Honors College Board of Visitors, was unveiled today in the Fenster Hall lobby at NJIT. Completed in black Champlain marble and anodized aluminum, the sculpture was inspired by the world’s first portable cellular telephone: the Microtac 8000x. Henderson, who invented wireless picture and video messaging in 1993, said that his work was an example of taking a temporal medium—the plastic used to build cell phones—and putting it into a natural medium. “The point of this body of work is appropriate to NJIT,” he said. “We are proud of our research work in cell telephony and advances at this institution.” Shown at left are Henderson, NJIT President Robert A. New Jersey Institute of Technology has been selected as a winner of the 2009 WealthEngine Award for Educational Fundraising from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). This award honors superior fundraising programs across the country and is a component of CASE’s Circle of Excellence program. NJIT will receive an Overall Improvement Award based on the judges’ analysis of three years of fundraising data submitted to the council’s annual survey. “This is a result of a total University Advancement effort and the significant support and involvement of President Robert A. Altenkirch and the academic deans,” said NJIT Vice President for University Advancement Charles R. Dees, Jr., PhD. >>

To promote the health of at-risk teenagers in Newark and the surrounding area, NJIT has received a $20,000 grant from The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey.   >>

NJIT has received a donation of $30,000 from Charles Lubetkin, of Verona. The money has been earmarked for the Lubetkin Family Soccer Endowed Scholarship fund.       >>

Charles R. Dees, Jr., Ph.D., has been named vice president for university advancement at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), effective March 17, 2003. In this position, Dees will serve as the chief administrative officer and leader of the advancement program. Under his purview fall the university’s offices of development, communications, alumni relations and special events. >>
