NJIT's Mengchu Zhou Proposes Using Petri Nets as a Solution to Automation Problems in Manufacturing in Upcoming IEEE Journal

An expert in robotics and automation problems, especially those involving manufacturing systems, NJIT Distinguished Professor and IEEE Fellow Mengchu Zhou will have two articles published in the upcoming proceedings of the 2013 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation. The Board of Trustees of New Jersey Institute of Technology has approved $200 million in construction and infrastructure projects on the university’s Newark campus, designed to enhance and expand NJIT’s role as the state’s science and technology university and a leader in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and research. The university will apply to the Secretary of Higher Education for $152 million from the Building Our Future Bond Act, state revolving funds and other sources to support the projects.

NJIT Doctoral Student Receives Louis Berger International Scholar Award

Xiaolu Wang, of Newark, a doctoral student at NJIT, was named the 2013 recipient of The Louis Berger International Scholar Award on Feb. 13, 2013. Wang will receive a stipend of approximately $19,500 to cover tuition and living costs. In 1997, The Louis Berger Group, Inc. established the Louis Berger International Scholar program at NJIT. To date, the program has provided scholarships to nine NJIT students. >>
For innovative research on semiconductor devices, NJIT Professor Durgamadhab (Durga) Misra, the associate chair for graduate programs in the Newark College of Engineering (NCE) Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will receive two Division Awards next May, the 2013 Electronic and Photonic Division Award and the 2013 Thomas D. Callinan Award from the Dielectric Science and Technology Division of the Electrochemical Society (ECS). Misra is an ECS Fellow.

Students from India's Heritage Institute Gain Hands-On Training at NJIT's Summer Research Experience Symposium

NJIT conducted a summer research program in partnership with the Heritage Institute of Technology (HITK) in Kolkata, India. The 20 students enrolled in NJIT’s Undergraduate Research Experience Symposium were able to participate in a state-of-the-art research facility with world-class faculty. They were accompanied by Srabanti Basu, a senior lecturer in biotechnology at HITK. The program was initiated and managed by Durga Misra, PhD, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NJIT, who also encouraged the participation of faculty and the Albert Dorman Honors College students who mentored the HITK students after hours in their residence hall. “The Summer Research Experience is a rare opportunity to receive hands-on training with NJIT professors and students at the university’s facilities,” said Misra. “A group of three students worked in NJIT’s new Vincent A. Stabile Systems Engineering and Management Laboratories to gain experience with the Stabile Laboratories’ Festo System.” Student research projects included low-power microchip design, drug delivery systems, nanoelectronics, ultrafiltration to scalable web search, clean slate Internet design and management systems analysis.

NJIT Student Awarded Hollings Scholarship

Salman Naqvi, an electrical engineering major at NJIT, has been been awarded the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship for 2008. Naqvi is working with NJIT Physics Professor Andrew Gerrard on developing a compact molecular-aerosol Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) system that detects the gravity waves above the Newark and New York City metropolitan areas. >>

She applied and was accepted into the Educational Opportunity Program at NJIT, a program that helps minority students – both financially and academically – become engineers.
