The Board of Trustees of New Jersey Institute of Technology has approved $200 million in construction and infrastructure projects on the university’s Newark campus, designed to enhance and expand NJIT’s role as the state’s science and technology university and a leader in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and research. The university will apply to the Secretary of Higher Education for $152 million from the Building Our Future Bond Act, state revolving funds and other sources to support the projects. >>

Peter Ma '07, a software engineer at Casting Networks, Inc. in Los Angeles, is seeking votes for his mobile application in the Apps for Healthy Kids Contest. Ma, who received his BS in computer engineering in 2007, recently entered and won a contest that was hosted by Snaptic and Hopelab, and also sponsored by TEDPrize; the challenge was to build an android application that promotes movement. Ma's "Earn the Stars" mobile application is a merit-based tool for educating, motivating, recognizing and rewarding children to make good choices about nutrition and participating in physical activities. NJIT conducted a summer research program in partnership with the Heritage Institute of Technology (HITK) in Kolkata, India. The 20 students enrolled in NJIT’s Undergraduate Research Experience Symposium were able to participate in a state-of-the-art research facility with world-class faculty. They were accompanied by Srabanti Basu, a senior lecturer in biotechnology at HITK. The program was initiated and managed by Durga Misra, PhD, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NJIT, who also encouraged the participation of faculty and the Albert Dorman Honors College students who mentored the HITK students after hours in their residence hall. “The Summer Research Experience is a rare opportunity to receive hands-on training with NJIT professors and students at the university’s facilities,” said Misra. “A group of three students worked in NJIT’s new Vincent A. Stabile Systems Engineering and Management Laboratories to gain experience with the Stabile Laboratories’ Festo System.” Student research projects included low-power microchip design, drug delivery systems, nanoelectronics, ultrafiltration to scalable web search, clean slate Internet design and management systems analysis. >>

Salman Naqvi, an electrical engineering major at NJIT, has been been awarded the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship for 2008. When Maria Karim graduated from Elizabeth High School at 18, she already had a baby boy. She was nonetheless determined to attend college. She applied and was accepted into the Educational Opportunity Program at NJIT, a program that helps minority students – both financially and academically – become engineers. Akansu’s book, Data Hiding Fundamentals and Applications: Content Security in Digital Multimedia, published by Elsevier-Academic Press (2004), develops a theoretical framework for different data hiding techniques, including watermarking. >>
