NJIT Dean of Graduate Studies Ronald Kane will moderate a faculty panel representative of the colleges and schools at NJIT at the third edition of the popular panel discussion, "One Day in the Life of a Professor/Careers in Academe" on Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. in Eberhardt Hall Room 112. Himanshu Gupta, PhD, a computer science professor at the State University of New York, Stony Brook will discuss "Spectrum Auctions in Cellular Networks" on Oct. 7, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the GITC Building 4415.

Peter F. Patel-Schneider, PhD, a member of the technical staff at Bell Labs Research, will discuss "From Description Logics to OWL 2" at the Fall 2009 Computer Science Seminar Series on Oct. 5, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the GITC Building 4415. 

Adel Dayarian, a doctoral student at Rutgers University, will discuss "*De Novo* Assembly of Mate Pair Reads from Next-Generation Sequencing Technologies" at a Department of Computer Science Seminar on Sept. 30, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the GITC Building 4415.

Cristian Borcea, PhD, of New Providence, assistant professor in the department of computer science, was promoted to associate professor with tenure at NJIT’s University Convocation, an annual celebration held on Sept. 2, 2009.  Borcea also received at the ceremony, the NJIT Award for Graduate Instruction.  He teaches in NJIT’s Department of Computer Science in the College of Computing Sciences.

James McHugh, PhD, of Bloomfield, professor in the department of computer science, received Master Teacher Designation, at NJIT’s University Convocation, an annual celebration held on Sept. 2, 2009.  

NJIT marks the start of the new school year on September 2, 2009 with University Convocation, an annual celebration and awards ceremony.  The event, which recognizes the accomplishments of students, faculty and staff, will be held at 3 p.m., in the Jim Wise Theatre in Kupfrian Hall on the NJIT campus. A reception follows.

Deepak Khemani, PhD of the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras will discuss "A CBR Approach to Knowledge Management" at a Department of Computer Science Seminar on July 13, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Rm. 4415.

Yun Qing Shi, PhD, professor of electrical and computer engineering at NJIT, will discuss "First Digit Law and Its Application to Digital Forensics" at a Computer Science Department Seminar on April 13, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center 4415.

Frederick Y. Wu, PhD of the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, will discuss "Business Entities: A Concept for Unifying Business Process and Information Modeling" on April 6, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in GITC Building 4415.

CCS Dean Narain Gehani will provide opening remarks at "Funding Experiences in CCS: Part 3," a  Computer Science Department Seminar on March 30, 2:30-4 p.m. in the GITC Building 3730. CCS Professors Frank Shih, Quentin Jones and Roxanne Hiltz will participate in the panel discussion.

High school students from more than 30 New Jersey schools will test their wits in a computer programming contest at NJIT.

Henri Angelino of the National Institute of Informatics in Tokyo, Japan will discuss main research activities and international cooperation policy at a Computer Science Department Seminar on March 9, 2:30–3:30 p.m. in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Rm. 4415.

Macneil Schonle of the University of California, San Diego will discuss "Using Programming Tools to Extend the Reach of Modularity" at a Computer Science Department Seminar on March  4, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Rm. 4415.

Zhichun Li of Northwestern University will discuss "Towards High Performance Network Defense" at the Department of Computer Science Seminar Series on Feb. 25 at 2:45 p.m. in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Rm. 4415.

Apu Kapadia, PhD, of the MIT Lincoln Laboratory will discuss "Halo: High-Assurance Searches in Peer-to-Peer Networks" on Feb. 23, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Room 4415.

Nathaniel Nystrom, a postdoctoral researcher at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, will discuss "Domain-Specific Language Extension for Correctness and Performance" at a Computer Science Department Seminar on Feb. 16, 2:30–3:30 p.m. in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Rm. 4415. 

Nine lucky NJIT students are testing one of the nation’s first application development courses for the Apple iPhone. The upper-level course, taught by Director of University Web Services Jim Robertson, illustrates how to develop applications for the popular iPhone.

NJIT Professor Grace Guiling Wang, PhD will discuss "Dependable Sensor Networks" on Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. in ECEC 202. The seminar is sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society North Jersey Chapter and NJIT's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. 

Judith Sheft, associate vice president for technology development at NJIT, has been awarded funds from the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology to assist faculty researchers with the most promising patentable inventions with funding grants of up to $50,000. 

The Computer Science Research Committee at NJIT in conjunction with the Department of Information Systems is organizing a series of four talks titled "Funding Experiences in CCS" during the coming academic year. NJIT Professors Guiling (Grace) Wang, James Calvin and Michael Recce will share their experiences with obtaining funding on Nov. 19, 2:30-4 p.m. in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Rm. 3730. Donald Sebastian, PhD (at left), Senior Vice President for Research and Development at NJIT, will provide opening remarks.   

Li (Erran) Li, PhD, of the Networking Research Lab at Bell Laboratories will discuss the feasibility of "Achieving Practical Constructive Interference Control in Wireless Networks" on October 20, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Room 4415. 

Annaleena Parhankangas, PhD, an associate professor in NJIT's School of Management, will explore the paradoxes, challenges and potential of entrepreneurship in technology-driven industries at the Department of Computer Science Seminar Series on Oct. 8, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Room 4415.

Yehoshua Perl, PhD, of New York City, a professor in the department of computer science, received at NJIT’s annual awards convocation, the NJIT Excellence in Research Award.

NJIT will mark, once again, the new school year with University Convocation, an annual celebration and awards ceremony recognizing students, faculty and staff accomplishments. 

Calling all computer geeks to prove their mettle, compete with the best and win cool prizes in the annual computer programming competition sponsored by the computer science department at NJIT. Once again, talented high school computer programmers will wow judges in a daylong series of competitions set for April 18 from 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. in the NJIT Campus Center.

Digital watermarking is the subject of a new book by Frank Y. Shih, PhD, professor in the department of computer science at NJIT. Shih's book, Digital Watermarking and Steganography (CRC Press, 2007) focuses on the creation of new techniques and algorithms to combat present and potential threats against information security.

The Medical Informatics Laboratory at the Department of Computer Science at NJIT, under the leadership of Yehoshua Perl, PhD and James Geller, PhD, succeeded in getting an unprecedented four papers accepted at the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Fall Symposium held last month in Chicago. The papers are the result of a research project funded by the National Library of Medicine under the title “Partitioning to Support Auditing and Extending the UMLS.”

Three graduate students enrolled in NJIT’s information technology master’s degree program will travel to Japan next spring to take advantage of an unusual internship program. For five months the students will study in Tokyo at the prestigious National Institute of Informatics, known in Japan as a national center for information technology research.

Fadi P. Deek, PhD, dean of NJIT's College of Science and Liberal Arts, and James A.M. McHugh, PhD, professor in the department of computer science, have published Open Source: Technology and Policy (Cambridge University Press, 2007). The book addresses prominent projects in the open source movement, along with its enabling technologies, social characteristics, legal issues, business venues, and public and educational roles.

Barbara G. Koster, corporate chief information officer at Prudential Financial, will discuss "Technology in the Workplace: Today and Tomorrow" on Nov. 14,  2:30–3:30 p.m. in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Room 3730.

Min Song, PhD, assistant professor in the department of information systems at NJIT, will discuss “A Hybrid Abbreviation Extraction Technique for Biomedical Literature” on Nov. 5, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Room 4415.

Olivier Bodenreider, PhD, staff scientist in the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications at the U.S. National Library of Medicine, will discuss “Aligning Relationships in the UMLS: Methods and Preliminary Results” on Oct. 23, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Rm. 4415.

College of Computing Sciences, NJIT's youngest college, has already established itself as a leader in producing computing-science graduates, ranking 22nd in the nation for awarding bachelor’s degrees in computer science; 6th for awarding master’s degrees; and 25th for awarding doctoral degrees.

Laxmi Parida, PhD, research staff member in the Computational Biology Center at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, will discuss "Permutations in Bioinformatics" at a Computer Science Seminar on April 30 at 2:30 p.m., Guttenberg Information Technologies Center, Room 4415.

Adriana Iamnitchi, PhD, an assistant professor in the department of computer science and engineering at the University of South Florida, will speak on “Filecules and Small Worlds in Scientific Communities: Characteristics and Significance” on Feb. 19 at 11:30 a.m., Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Rm. 4415.

Some men seek rare antiques, others hunt wild boar. NJIT computer scientist Yehoshua Perl, PhD, creates elegant logical structures to track down errant or misplaced medical terms. The errors creep into documents and databases developed by corporations, government agencies, hospitals and academic institutions that design, maintain and use terminologies throughout a variety of systems.

Mark E. Segal, PhD, executive director of Software Technology Research at Telcordia Technologies, will discuss "Building Dependable Software Systems: Current Research, Practical Experiences, and Future Directions" on Dec. 11, 2:30-3:30 p.m., GITC Rm. 4415.

“Multi-Query Optimization of Sliding Window Aggregates” is the topic of a seminar by Lukasz Golab, PhD, a member of AT&T Labs-Research, Florham Park, NJ, on Nov. 29, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Guttenberg Information Technologies Center, Rm. 4415.

Marek Rusinkiewicz, vice president and general manager at Telcordia, will discuss computer and information science research at Telcordia Applied Research Laboratories on Nov. 15, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center, Rm. 4415.

Bogdan Georgescu, PhD, of Siemens Research Labs will discuss "Database-Guided Segmentation of Anatomical Structures with Complex Appearance" on Oct. 4, 2:30-3:30 p.m., in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center, Rm. 4415.

This fall, NJIT will offer to companies and government agencies a practical, hands-on and sophisticated six-course, 18-credit certificate program designed to combat digital and physical terrorism. "Our goal is to create a new generation of counter-terrorism experts and we think the array of in-depth courses we’ve put together will fit the bill,” said Robert Statica, program director.

Starting this fall, William Paterson University (WPU) students can start working on master’s degrees in computer science or math from NJIT while completing their bachelor’s degrees at WPU. “This new agreement will allow William Paterson students and alumni as well as professionals who live or work near the WPU campus to advance their educations without leaving their backyards,” said Gale Tenen Spak, associate vice president of Continuing and Distance Learning Education at NJIT.

Alex X. Liu, a PhD candidate in the department of computer sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, will discuss "Firewall Design Methods" on March 20, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Room 4415.
