Farrow, PhD, who with his research team have discovered how to make nanoscale arrays of the world’s smallest probe for investigating the electrical properties of individual living cells was awarded yesterday, Oct. 4, 2012, the NJIT Board of Overseers Excellence in Research Prize and Medal. This prize is the most prestigious research award at NJIT. It is the fifth time the award has been made.

On June 21, NJIT celebrated the award of some $8 million in Department of Labor grants awarded to NJIT and the Newark Workforce Investment Board (NWIB). Partnering with the NWIB, industry partners, local community colleges and other business alliances, NJIT will provide training in high-wage, high-demand information technology occupations to help fill vacancies that otherwise would go to foreign labor using H-1B visas.

CGC Genetics, Inc., the first private medical genetics laboratory in Portugal, celebrated the grand opening today of its U.S. operations in NJIT's Enterprise Development Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and press conference. Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker, whose office brought CGC to Newark and the U.S., led the ribbon-cutting ceremony with Stefan Pryor, deputy mayor for Economic Development; Joao Vellera, Portuguese ambassador to the U.S.; Maria Amelia Paiva, consul general of Portugal; Robert A. Altenkirch, president of NJIT; Donald H. Sebastian, senior vice president for research and development at NJIT; and Dr. Robert Johnson, dean of the New Jersey Medical School.

Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker was the guest master of ceremonies at NJIT’s Celebration 2007 at the Somerset Palace. Celebration is NJIT’s annual black-tie event. This year 300 supporters attended and raised almost $400,000 for endowed scholarship funds to benefit NJIT students. Since 1995, this gala evening of dinner and dancing has raised nearly $3 million. Celebration honors individuals for achievements of great benefit to New Jersey and the nation, and organizations that have been exceptional in their commitment to the university's mission.
