Two NJIT faculty members will receive Innovators’ Awards and two recent alumni will be honored at the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame dinner on Oct. 22, 2009 at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Haim Grebel, of Livingston, an NJIT electrical engineering professor, whose work focuses on understanding the properties of structures at the nanoscale, especially singled-walled carbon nanotubes and graphene, has received the NJIT Excellence in Research Award.

Jerry Fjermestad, of Orangeburg, NY, an NJIT professor who has focused his research on understanding how corporate leaders communicate better using computers, has received the NJIT Excellence in Research Award. The honor was awarded Sept. 2, 2009 at the University Convocation, an annual celebration. Fjermestad is an associate professor in NJIT’s School of Management.

Cristian Borcea, PhD, of New Providence, assistant professor in the department of computer science, was promoted to associate professor with tenure at NJIT’s University Convocation, an annual celebration held on Sept. 2, 2009. Borcea also received at the ceremony, the NJIT Award for Graduate Instruction. He teaches in NJIT’s Department of Computer Science in the College of Computing Sciences.

Akash R. Shukla, an industrial engineering major at NJIT, celebrated on Sunday the release of his new book titled Measure of a Man, a personal account of his experience with limb-lengthening surgery and his year-long recovery. NJIT marks the start of the new school year on September 2, 2009 with University Convocation, an annual celebration and awards ceremony. The event, which recognizes the accomplishments of students, faculty and staff, will be held at 3 p.m., in the Jim Wise Theatre in Kupfrian Hall on the NJIT campus. A reception follows.
NJIT students aim to improve the quality of life in New Jersey and there is no better indication of the scope of these efforts than the remarkable range of student research projects entered in the recent annual Dana Knox Student Research Showcase.
NJIT, the Israel Economic Mission in New York and the New Jersey-Israel Commission will present on April 1, 2009 an Israel Homeland Security Conference at NJIT. Leading U.S. integrators, public entities and security companies are invited.
Thirty-five NJIT faculty members and graduate students will present posters describing new research in a wide range of disciplines supported by the National Science Foundation-funded NJIT ADVANCE Program on March 30, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Campus Center Atrium. The Computer Science Research Committee at NJIT in conjunction with the Department of Information Systems is organizing a series of four talks titled "Funding Experiences in CCS" during the coming academic year. NJIT Professors Guiling (Grace) Wang, James Calvin and Michael Recce will share their experiences with obtaining funding on Nov. 19, 2:30-4 p.m. in the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center Rm. 3730. Donald Sebastian, PhD (at left), Senior Vice President for Research and Development at NJIT, will provide opening remarks.
The Research & Development Council of New Jersey will present on Nov. 6, 2008, a coveted Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award to NJIT Distinguished Professor Yeheskel Bar-Ness, a prominent expert in the field of wireless communications and signal processing.
The Department of Justice has awarded NJIT $254,889 to continue developing childproof child-safe gun technology. US Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and US Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-08) earmarked the grant in last year’s annual Congressional appropriation bill.

Donald H. Sebastian, Sr. PhD, senior vice president for research and development at NJIT received the “Academia Award” from Strengthening the Mid-Atlantic Region for Tomorrow (SMART), at the organization’s annual awards banquet held in Wilmington on Jan. 5, 2007.
Donald H. Sebastian, PhD, senior vice president of research and development at NJIT, was inducted into the New Jersey High-Tech Hall of Fame in the academic category. “It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by the members of New Jersey’s high-tech community,” said Sebastian.

Legislation that would place a $350 million bond proposal for stem-cell research on the ballot in November was approved by a New Jersey Senate panel yesterday positioning the bill for a vote by the full house during the lame-duck legislative session. The bill would boost the state's funding for labs for stem-cell and other biomedical research and allow for $50 million for a biomedical center to be established at NJIT. Donald H. Sebastian, PhD, senior vice president of research and development, and Robert A. Altenkirch, PhD, president, spoke yesterday on behalf of the expenditure.

Sixty people crowded last week into a small room at the Bayonne police firing range to witness smart gun technology. Donald B. Sebastian, senior vice president of research and development at NJIT, stood near an oversized screen displaying a real-time video of an NJIT policeman shooting an experimental handgun in an adjacent indoor range. Twenty electronic computerized sensors embedded in the gun’s grip distinguished known from unknown users. “We’ve only just begun and we’re pleased to say that we’re getting 90 percent reliability when scanning users,” said Sebastian.

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) announced today the formation of a strategic partnership between researchers at the university and Auxilia Inc., Albany, NY. The new company will implement and commercialize applications of high altitude airships (HAA) and other lighter-than-air vehicles.
