Bernard Harris, MD, the first African American astronaut to walk in space, inspired middle schoolers at NJIT yesterday to pursue careers in science, technology engineering and math by detailing what it really was like to be an astronaut and live in space. The 54 campers, all enrolled at the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp, sat spellbound for more than an hour as the medical doctor, an internist by training, recounted what was needed to be successful.  >>

Harris, MD, of Houston, the veteran of two space shuttle missions and the first African-American to walk in space, visited NJIT today, first teaching in the morning, then speaking to youngsters participating in the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp. NJIT once again served as one of 30 locations throughout the nation and the only NJ venue for the two-week residential camp, which offers middle-school students a first-hand experience with experiments, role models and innovative programs to stimulate their interest in engineering and science as a potential career path. >>

Bernard Harris, MD, of Houston, veteran of two space shuttle missions and the first African-American to walk in space, visits NJIT  July 14, 2010. He’ll teach in the morning, then speak to youngsters at a luncheon. During the class, students will design and build a straw and tin foil raft, then see how many pennies the raft can hold before sinking. It is based on Archimedes’ principle.  >>

NJIT’s 2009 Commencement Ceremony will be held Saturday, May 16, 2009, at the Prudential Center, Newark from 9 a.m.-noon. During the ceremony, more than 2,000 honorary doctoral degrees and earned doctoral, master’s, and bachelor’s degrees will be conferred on the Class of 2009. >>

Felicia Amaechi, a senior majoring in biomedical engineering, and Karen Martinez, a junior majoring in chemical engineering, captured second place in the ExxonMobil Subject Matter Expert (SME) Bowl at the 2009 Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Conference on Nov. 8 in Baltimore. The SME Bowl is a competition with a "College Bowl" atmosphere where student teams representing the 10 SWE regions compete to answer engineering, math and science questions. Felicia and Karen, who are both in NJIT's Educational Opportunity Program, were part of a five-member team that included fellow region members from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Each team member received a $75 cash prize and $1500 for the region. Felicia is president of NJIT's SWE section and a Murray Women’s Center Ambassador. >>

NJIT will be the only New York metropolitan location to host the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp from June 30-July 17, 2008.  Fifty-two area middle school students from 36 schools will attend. >>

Former astronaut Bernard Harris and the ExxonMobil Foundation have named NJIT to be among 19 university campus locations that will host the 2007 ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camps. NJIT will be the only New Jersey participant in the program. >>
