NSF CAREER Award Workshop: Register Today

The NJIT Research Committee will host the NSF CAREER Award Workshop on April 3 from 11:30 – 2:30 p.m. in 112 Eberhart Hall. The objectives of the workshop are to provide an open forum for the newly hired faculty members to interact with the NSF CAREER awardees on campus and help them jump-start their CAREER proposal preparation and submission.

Martin Katzen, PhD, professor in the department of mathematical sciences (shown here with NJIT President Robert A. Altenkirch), Deran Hanesian, PhD, professor in the Otto H. York Department of Chemical, Biological and Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Onofrio Russo, PhD, professor in the department of physics, received awards for 45 years of service on Oct. 28 at the 2009 Service Award ceremony and reception. A total of 134 employees and retirees were recognized for their years of service to the university.

Essex County College President A. Zachary Yamba, EdD delivered the keynote address yesterday at the annual University Convocation, which recognized faculty, staff and student accomplishments. Yamba, who was one of the early founders of a partnership that has enabled ECC and NJIT, Rutgers-Newark and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey to collaborate on numerous collegiate and community initiatives in the city's University Heights district, discussed the role of education in the revitalization of Newark. "Newark is our home–and home to many of our students," said Yamba. "We must be active participants in the unfolding of its future."

Susana Addo Ntim, a PhD student in the department of chemistry and environmental science at NJIT, has been awarded a Faculty for the Future fellowship from the Schlumberger Foundation. The Faculty for the Future awards are open to women academics in science and engineering from developing and emerging countries and provide funding for advanced graduate study. The long-term goal of the program is to generate conditions that result in more young women pursuing scientific disciplines.

Bryan J. Pfister, PhD, a specialist in neural tissue engineering, has been awarded a prestigious Faculty Early Career Development Award by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Pfister, who is an assistant professor of biomedical engineering at NJIT’s Newark College of Engineering, received the award to support and expand his research into rapid axon stretch growth, a technique for regenerating damaged or diseased nerve cells. >>
If you have ever wondered why study abroad is terrific, just ask Alexa McCartney, of Somerville, a fifth-year architecture student at NJIT who will graduate May 17, 2008. McCartney spent a semester studying in Spain this past year. >>
NJIT Systems Manager Appointed to Two-Year Position on SunGard Summit Program Committee

Tiffany Small, systems manager of NJIT's Office of International Students and Faculty (OIS&F), served as the program chair for the fsaATLAS track for the March 2007 SunGard Summit conference. This is only the second year that SunGard Higher Education has had a track solely dedicated to its fsaATLAS software, used by OIS&F and the Office of University Admissions to report international student and exchange visitor data to the Department of Homeland Security. As a result of her efforts, the number and variety of fsaATLAS sessions increased, as well as the number of session attendees. >>

NJIT hosted its inaugural Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night on Friday, May 14, 2004 at Riverfront Stadium in downtown Newark. More than 200 faculty members, staff and their families enjoyed a two-hour buffet meal and watched the Newark Bears play against the Pennsylvania Road Warriors. NJIT President Robert A. Altenkirch threw out the first ball. In addition, the 2004 employee service award recipients were congratulated.
