On June 21, NJIT celebrated the award of some $8 million in Department of Labor grants awarded to NJIT and the Newark Workforce Investment Board (NWIB). Partnering with the NWIB, industry partners, local community colleges and other business alliances, NJIT will provide training in high-wage, high-demand information technology occupations to help fill vacancies that otherwise would go to foreign labor using H-1B visas.

Newark Innovation Acceleration Challenge Finalists Present Projects; Four Winners Named

Six finalists in the Newark Innovation Acceleration Challenge presented their projects this week at NJIT’s Enterprise Development Center (EDC). In the end, Anson Wilson (Mave), Harsh Mehta (T-Shirt Tech), Mario Rannamae (Elect Charge); and Daniel Cerone (WordHerd) were awarded Capital One Summer Innovation Acceleration Fellowships of $2000 each to help support them during the summer so that they can spend time working in the New Jersey Innovation Acceleration Center Entrepreneurial Learning Lab at the EDC.

NJIT Physics Professor Gordon A. Thomas was one of eight poster winners announced for the Biotech 2010 Innovation Corridor, the tenth annual joint symposium of BioNJ and Pennsylvania Bio. Members of the northern New Jersey business, nonprofit and academic communities joined Jeanne C. Meister, founder of the New Learning Playbook blog, to discuss the training and development challenges that employers face in dealing with the new generation of workers on Dec. 11 at NJIT. Meister, an internationally recognized consultant in designing and implementing learning organizations for Fortune 1,000 firms, will be leading this project with Gale Tenen Spak, Associate Vice President, Continuing and Distance Education at NJIT. The group of human resources professionals was convened as part of the North Jersey Partners Life Long Learning Initiative with the goal of transitioning the northern New Jersey area into a continual learning region through training and workforce development. Corzine will announce the kickoff of the New Jersey Economic Innovation Alliance, made possible by a Workforce Innovation for Regional Economic Development (WIRED) grant, on March 16, at 10 a.m. at NJIT. A public session from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Campus Center Atrium will feature Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor Douglas Small who will explain the initiative. The $5.1M WIRED grant will support community partners’ efforts to harness the regions’ unique resources to transform their local economies. A team of NJIT engineering students received the Egor Popov Award for Structural Innovation and ranked ninth overall in the 2007 Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) Seismic Design Competition for Undergraduates in Civil and Structural Engineering.
