Multicolored flags symbolizing those who died in the Holocaust were placed on the Campus Green this week by NJIT students to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day. The Field of Flags event was part of NJIT's One World Week 2009 celebration of campus diversity. "We hope that staff and faculty will engage in conversations about what it means to be part of our multicultural community and how we can share our knowledge in the world, as well as celebrate our many differences that make our multicultural community an exciting place to live and learn," said Joseph Rios, assistant director for Leadership and Diversity Programs.

In recognition of World AIDS Day 2008, the NJIT Campus Center is hosting panels of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. "The Campus Center is proud to host the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt in observance of World AIDS Day," said Joseph Rios, assistant director for Leadership and Diversity Programs at NJIT. "In the US, people under 25 are at the highest risk for contracting the disease and one-third of the people who have HIV don’t know it. We hope that by continuing to talk about HIV and AIDS that our community members will look out for themselves and others. World AIDS Day celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, all the more reason for NJIT to continue to recognize this important world-wide observance.”
NJIT faculty, staff and students marked their countries of origin on maps displayed in the Campus Center as part of the
One World Week 2008 celebration of campus diversity. Other activities scheduled this week include a Global Dinner and the "Dancing with the Staff" Latin dance competition on April 18.
Two NJIT staff members were invited by the NJ Governor’s Office of Volunteerism to give presentations at The Serve, a statewide conference on student volunteerism, national service, service learning and philanthropy, on April 4 at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. Joseph Rios (left), assistant director for Leadership and Diversity Programs, will give tips on “Resume Writing for Student Leaders” and Humberto "Humby" Baquerizo, assistant director of Greek Life and Wellness Programs, will discuss “Greek Life and Community Service.”
