Peter Ma '07, a software engineer at Casting Networks, Inc. in Los Angeles, is seeking votes for his mobile application in the Apps for Healthy Kids Contest. Ma, who received his BS in computer engineering in 2007, recently entered and won a contest that was hosted by Snaptic and Hopelab, and also sponsored by TEDPrize; the challenge was to build an android application that promotes movement. Ma's "Earn the Stars" mobile application is a merit-based tool for educating, motivating, recognizing and rewarding children to make good choices about nutrition and participating in physical activities. "We made sure to highlight that nutrition and sports are the key," says Ma, a former captain of the NJIT men's soccer team.  >>

The NJIT women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Day with a 2-0 win over visiting Howard Sunday afternoon in Great West Conference action at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium at Lubetkin Field. The Highlanders recognized senior Briana Morales in pre-game ceremonies. With 58 career games played, Briana is among the program's all-time leaders. >>

An estimated 3,000 students, faculty, staff, alumni and their families participated in the university's annual fall festival, NJIT Day 2009, on Oct. 10. NJIT Day highlights included carnival rides and student organization game booths. NJIT has renamed its on-campus soccer venue as Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium, adding the name of the great former coach, director of athletics and physical education, and professor to the facility’s title. J. Malcolm Simon’s name was added this year in a special recognition ceremony held in the NJIT Campus Center in conjunction with the home soccer game played the evening of Sept. 12.  >>

The NJIT women’s soccer team has been selected first in the East Division of the Great West Conference in the inaugural preseason coaches’ poll. Richard J. Codey, will serve as the special guest master of ceremonies. The world-renowned Duprees, who started their 1960s musical careers in Jersey City with hits like “You Belong to Me,” will provide entertainment. >>

Erik Magnusson and Eddie Romero scored second-half goals for NJIT in the Highlanders’ inspired come-from-behind 2-1 men’s soccer win over visiting Rutgers on a cold Wednesday night on Lubetkin Field. The Highlanders, hosting a Big East Conference opponent in men’s soccer the first time in NJIT’s five seasons as a Division I program, gave their strongest effort of 2008 from start to finish. >>

Erika Taugher and Emma Vinski each scored goals and visiting NJIT came away with a 2-0 women's soccer win Sunday afternoon at South Carolina State in the United Soccer Conference opener for each team. NJIT senior men's soccer goalkeeper Josh Osit has been named Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) Goalkeeper of the Week, the ASC announced today. Osit recorded five saves in the season opener against Siena. >>

NJIT's Office of Greek Life received the Community Spirit Award for the largest civic team in attendance on the 10th Annual Jersey Cares Day on May 3. More than 100 NJIT students and staff, including the NJIT soccer and volleyball teams, Albert Dorman Honors College, and the Office of Greek Life painted murals, cleaned parks and planted trees around the city and its public schools. NJIT donated a total of more than $1,200 and more than 650 hours of community service as part of The Big Give program. “I am thankful for all the support of the students, faculty and staff who donated or volunteered for this new initiative,” said Humberto Baquerizo, assistant director of Greek Life. >>

NJIT women's soccer player Erika Taugher is set to return to the international stage, having been called to train with the women's national team of Portugal in preparation for the prestigious 2008 Algarve Cup. >>

The Newark Ironbound Express soccer team, one of 63 teams that comprise the United Soccer Leagues (USL) Premier Development League, will play their home games on NJIT’s Lubetkin Field beginning in May 2008. Ironbound Express President Joseph Branco ‘74, an NJIT soccer alumnus, made the announcement at a press conference at NJIT on Feb. 8. The team provides the best U.S. and Canadian players ages 19-23 with the opportunity to perform in a professional setting during the summer months while maintaining their college eligibility. “We are hoping to attract the best players in New Jersey to play with us over the summer and give them the opportunity to go to Europe and South America,” said Branco. “If you think about soccer in the U.S., it really starts at the college level.”  >>

NJIT women's soccer coach Alyssa Radu and players Amanda Bayiokos, Katie Hepfinger and Briana Morales will participate in the NCAA Division I Women's College Cup YES Clinic for girls and boys ages 10-16 on Dec. 2 in Cary, NC. The three players were selected from among student-athletes from across the country who applied to take part as volunteers in the clinic. >>

Jo Rene Valentin's goal in the third minute of the second overtime period lifted NJIT to a 1-0 win at Atlantic Soccer Conference rival Longwood Sunday afternoon. The victory, their first on the road, boosted the Highlanders to 2-1-1 in the Atlantic Soccer Conference, solidifying their hopes of qualifying for the four-team ASC postseason tournament. >>

osh Osit, NJIT's sophomore goalkeeper, was named as Atlantic Soccer Conference Player/Goalie of the Week for his play in the Highlanders' 1-0-1 week. Osit was in goal for both a 1-1 double overtime tie against defending ASC champ Hartwick last Tuesday and for a come-from-behind 2-1 overtime win over Howard last Saturday. >>

NJIT sophomore Erika Taugher has been called up to join Portugal's national women's soccer team for the upcoming Algarve Women's Soccer Cup to be contested by the national teams of 11 countries, including the United States, between March 9 and March 15. >>

Dena Baskous was honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America on its 2005 all-New England Region second team. Baskous, a sophomore, was a key player in helping NJIT post new program records for overall wins and conference wins while also making postseason play for the first time. >>

Sophomores Eddie Romero and Collin Cunning were named to the 2005 All-Atlantic Soccer Conference Team, as voted by the ASC coaches. Romero, a forward, was voted onto the All-ASC first team and Cunning, a goalkeeper, was an All-ASC second team honoree. >>

NJIT has been selected to compete in and host the entire six-team 2005 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Women's Soccer Championship, starting with two quarterfinal games on Nov. 9 at 5 p.m and 7 p.m. >>

Dena Baskous, Bruna Lotufo and Erika Taugher were named to the All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference team in voting by CACC coaches. The three all-stars were key performers in NJIT's emergence as one of the CACC's top teams. >>

Erin Salgado, playing her last career home game, was one of three different players to score for the Highlanders, lifting NJIT to its school-record seventh women's soccer win of the season, 3-1, over NCAA Division I opponent Delaware State on Saturday. NJIT previously won six games in 2001 >>

NJIT got on the scoreboard in the seventh minute and then held on the rest of the way for a 1-0 win at Dominican in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's soccer Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Erika Taugher's unassisted goal in the 72nd minute lifted the NJIT women's soccer team to a 1-0 road win over Nyack in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play yesterday. The NJIT men’s soccer team made history Saturday afternoon, registering its first victory as an NCAA Division I program in a 2-0 win over Manhattan College in the opening round of the SoccerPost.com Classic. The Highlanders, who are in their first season as a full, championship-eligible member of Division I in men’s soccer, scored twice in the last 11 minutes to claim the win over Manhattan. >>

The Highlanders picked up their first win of the young season, defeating visiting Felician College, 3-0, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women’s soccer Wednesday night.
