NJIT Women's Soccer Team Tops Saint Peter's in 2-1 Road Win

NJIT newcomers Camille Billing and Amanda Redden collected their first college goals, lifting the Highlanders to their first women’s soccer victory of 2010, a 2-1 win at Saint Peter’s Sunday afternoon. The Highlanders (1-1) also got the first college assist from freshman Rebecca Tustin, who helped out on Billing’s goal, in taking the road win.

Peter Ma '07, a software engineer at Casting Networks, Inc. in Los Angeles, is seeking votes for his mobile application in the Apps for Healthy Kids Contest. Ma, who received his BS in computer engineering in 2007, recently entered and won a contest that was hosted by Snaptic and Hopelab, and also sponsored by TEDPrize; the challenge was to build an android application that promotes movement. Ma's "Earn the Stars" mobile application is a merit-based tool for educating, motivating, recognizing and rewarding children to make good choices about nutrition and participating in physical activities. "We made sure to highlight that nutrition and sports are the key," says Ma, a former captain of the NJIT men's soccer team. >>

The NJIT women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Day with a 2-0 win over visiting Howard Sunday afternoon in Great West Conference action at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium at Lubetkin Field. The Highlanders recognized senior Briana Morales in pre-game ceremonies. With 58 career games played, Briana is among the program's all-time leaders.

An estimated 3,000 students, faculty, staff, alumni and their families participated in the university's annual fall festival, NJIT Day 2009, on Oct. 10. NJIT Day highlights included carnival rides and student organization game booths. Other weekend events included the Young Alumni Club Chili Cook-Off (at left), wins for men’s soccer and women's volleyball, Highlander Games, NJIT Parents Association Sports and Celebrity Memorabilia Auction, 30th Anniversary of Residence Life alumni reception, and the Tour de Tech bike race.

NJIT's Home Soccer Venue Renamed

NJIT has renamed its on-campus soccer venue as Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium, adding the name of the great former coach, director of athletics and physical education, and professor to the facility’s title. J. Malcolm Simon’s name was added this year in a special recognition ceremony held in the NJIT Campus Center in conjunction with the home soccer game played the evening of Sept. 12.

NJIT senior men's soccer goalkeeper Josh Osit has been named Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) Goalkeeper of the Week, the ASC announced today. Osit recorded five saves in the season opener against Siena. >>
NJIT's Office of Greek Life received the Community Spirit Award for the largest civic team in attendance on the 10th Annual Jersey Cares Day on May 3. More than 100 NJIT students and staff, including the NJIT soccer and volleyball teams, Albert Dorman Honors College, and the Office of Greek Life painted murals, cleaned parks and planted trees around the city and its public schools. NJIT donated a total of more than $1,200 and more than 650 hours of community service as part of The Big Give program. “I am thankful for all the support of the students, faculty and staff who donated or volunteered for this new initiative,” said Humberto Baquerizo, assistant director of Greek Life. >>

NJIT women's soccer player Erika Taugher is set to return to the international stage, having been called to train with the women's national team of Portugal in preparation for the prestigious 2008 Algarve Cup. >>
The Newark Ironbound Express soccer team, one of 63 teams that comprise the United Soccer Leagues (USL) Premier Development League, will play their home games on NJIT’s Lubetkin Field beginning in May 2008. Ironbound Express President Joseph Branco ‘74, an NJIT soccer alumnus, made the announcement at a press conference at NJIT on Feb. 8. The team provides the best U.S. and Canadian players ages 19-23 with the opportunity to perform in a professional setting during the summer months while maintaining their college eligibility. “We are hoping to attract the best players in New Jersey to play with us over the summer and give them the opportunity to go to Europe and South America,” said Branco. “If you think about soccer in the U.S., it really starts at the college level.” >>
