NJIT Places 29 Student-Athletes on 2009-10 Winter/Spring Great West Conference All-Academic Team

NJIT placed 29 student-athletes in six sports on the 2009-10 Winter/Spring Great West Conference All-Academic team. Selection to the team requires that student-athletes achieve a minimum cumulative 3.2 grade-point average and also must have participated in at least 50 percent of their respective teams’ contests.

NJIT sophomore Adam Gustafson was named to the 2010 Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) All-Academic team. Gustafson, a biomedical engineering major enrolled in NJIT's Albert Dorman Honors College, holds a 3.72 cumulative GPA.

Nine NJIT student-athletes in four sports were named to the Fall 2009 Great West Conference All-Academic team. The honorees were: Joe Ju (men’s cross country); Cara Constantino, Iulia Doci, Daisy Gallegos, Kelsey Johnson (women’s cross country); Christi Taylor (women’s soccer); Sabrina Baby, Katrina Hornstein and Erica Schultz (women’s volleyball).

NJIT senior Sabrina Baby was named to the ESPN Magazine’s Academic All-America third-team for volleyball, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. She is NJIT’s first Highlander student-athlete in any sport to receive Academic All-America laurels at the Division I level. >>
NJIT Community Celebrates Annual Fall Festival on Oct. 10

An estimated 3,000 students, faculty, staff, alumni and their families participated in the university's annual fall festival, NJIT Day 2009, on Oct. 10. NJIT Day highlights included carnival rides and student organization game booths. Other weekend events included the Young Alumni Club Chili Cook-Off (at left), wins for men’s soccer and women's volleyball, Highlander Games, NJIT Parents Association Sports and Celebrity Memorabilia Auction, 30th Anniversary of Residence Life alumni reception, and the Tour de Tech bike race.

NJIT swept Wagner, 3-0, in women’s volleyball Tuesday night, but it wasn’t easy, as the Highlanders edged the Seahawks, 25-23, 25-21 and 27-25. Baaba Hughes led the NJIT attack with 10 kills, Danielle Thompson had 25 assists and three players—Agnieszka Pregowska, Hughes and Renata Pandolfo—had two service aces apiece. >>
NJIT's Office of Greek Life received the Community Spirit Award for the largest civic team in attendance on the 10th Annual Jersey Cares Day on May 3. More than 100 NJIT students and staff, including the NJIT soccer and volleyball teams, Albert Dorman Honors College, and the Office of Greek Life painted murals, cleaned parks and planted trees around the city and its public schools. NJIT donated a total of more than $1,200 and more than 650 hours of community service as part of The Big Give program. “I am thankful for all the support of the students, faculty and staff who donated or volunteered for this new initiative,” said Humberto Baquerizo, assistant director of Greek Life. >>
