Timothy Chang, PhD, distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, will receive a Special Award for his achievements in the areas of ultra-high precision systems, genetic systems, robotics and motion control; and Yun-Qing Shi, PhD, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will be recognized for his work in digital forensics and security. Jingjing Zhang, a PhD candidate in NJIT's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will receive the Graduate Student Award. Vikki Hazelwood, PhD, who received her MS from NJIT in 1998, will receive the Advancement of Invention Award for a pioneering process for translational research in medicine and Richard Caizza, who received a certificate in plastics technology from NJIT in 1992, will receive the Inventor of the Year award for his "Single-Handedly Actuatable Safety Shield for Needles" patent. >>

Daniel Boston, a doctoral student in NJIT's College of Computing Sciences, provided technological advice to supplement the legal and educational expertise provided by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation Mock Trial Committee for the 29th Annual Vincent J. Apruzzese High School Mock Trial Competition this month. The case deals with distracted driving/walking resulting from the use of wireless electronic communication devices. "It was a good experience working with the Mock Trial Committee in a technical capacity. This provided a wonderful opportunity to evaluate an all-too-real scenario and help shape the technological and technical aspects of the case toward that same level of realism. Incoming first-year students took part in a two-day interactive overnight orientation this week as part of NJIT’s Connections Miniversity Program. Philip Rinaldi '68, founder and former chief executive officer of Coffeyville Resources and a member of the NJIT Board of Overseers, hosted a dinner cruise around Manhattan for 38 guests on June 5 aboard his one-of-a-kind yacht, the Vivere. The cruise was a silent auction offering at NJIT's Celebration 2007. In addition to the Rinaldis’ generosity, the NJIT Board of Overseers and NJIT Board of Trustees members who signed on for the cruise donated more than $10,800 to NJIT. Salman Naqvi, an electrical engineering major at NJIT, has been been awarded the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship for 2008. Naqvi is working with NJIT Physics Professor Andrew Gerrard on developing a compact molecular-aerosol Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) system that detects the gravity waves above the Newark and New York City metropolitan areas.  >>

A pioneering educator at NJIT who strongly believes in experiential learning was today named 2007 New Jersey Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. A liquid dispensing system useful for identifying medical woes ranging from cancer to bird flu will garner an award for two NJ inventors this week. The researchers Timothy Chang, electrical and computer engineering professor at NJIT, and Peter Tolias, executive director, Institute of Genomic Medicine at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, will be honored Nov. 7 by the Research and Development Council of New Jersey for their patent to develop this new system. >>

NJ Governor Jon S. Corzine delivered the keynote speech today at the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey’s 17th Annual Convention Expo & Career Fair at NJIT. The governor lauded NJIT’s role in contributing to the state’s economic development through its business incubator and other programs. More than 500 students representing 17 high schools and 17 middle schools in the state will travel to NJIT tomorrow to compete in the New Jersey Science Olympiad. Starting this fall, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will offer three accelerated degree programs--two at universities and one at a community college.  The programs will make NJIT’s technological expertise and education available to many more students. >>

Starting this fall, students at New Jersey City University (NJCU) can begin working on master’s degrees in computer science or information systems from NJIT, while completing their bachelor’s degrees at NJCU. NJIT and NJCU signed an agreement to offer the new degree program yesterday at NJCU. “Inter-institutional cooperation between NJCU and NJIT will have a positive impact on students interested in computer science and information systems, who in five years can have both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in these fields,” said NJIT President Robert Altenkirch. “The joint degree will be a great advantage to these students both intellectually as well as when they enter the job market.” >>

A group of high school students spent the day and most of the night at NJIT building meditation rooms out of nothing more than UPS boxes and tape. The project is part of the New Jersey School of Architecture’s Summer Architecture Career Exploration Program, a two-day intensive class that teaches students what it is like to attend architecture school. Nine teams of architecture students from NJIT competed in a masonry building competition, with four teams winning nearly $20,000 in prize money. Legislation that would place a $350 million bond proposal for stem-cell research on the ballot in November was approved by a New Jersey Senate panel yesterday positioning the bill for a vote by the full house during the lame-duck legislative session. The bill would boost the state's funding for labs for stem-cell and other biomedical research and allow for $50 million for a biomedical center to be established at NJIT. Donald H. Sebastian, PhD, senior vice president of research and development, and Robert A. Altenkirch, PhD, president, spoke yesterday on behalf of the expenditure. >>

Biomedical engineering pioneer Ronald Rockland, PhD, associate dean and associate professor at NJIT, will receive an award from the New Jersey Association for Biomedical Research. One day last year, Matt Gosser, who teaches architectural graphics at NJIT, read that the Pabst Brewery was being demolished. But when Gosser walked inside the brewery, he found a treasure trove of objects: original architectural drawings; engineering drawings; machine parts; and metal work. Sixteen months later, the New Jersey School of Architecture (NJSOA) gallery at NJIT is hosting “AR+CHAEOLOGY: The Death and After-life of the Pabst Brewery,” an exhibit featuring sculpture, furniture and collages that Gosser made from objects he found in the brewery. “We feel that Gosser’s exhibit is historic and reflects an important part of Newark’s history and economic development,” said James Dyer, associate dean at NJSOA. >>

Last week, NJIT unveiled five new programs to bolster small businesses and help them grow bigger. The Enterprise Development Center at NJIT, the state’s oldest and largest incubator program, now offers client companies programs to improve the marketing skills and business acumen of company principals. New Jersey Network (NJN) News will air a segment tonight about a team of NJIT students who are designing an unmanned vehicle that will compete in the Grand Challenge, a 175-mile race in the desert. Atam Dhawan, PhD, chairman of the electrical and computer engineering (ECE) department; Timothy Chang, PhD, associate professor, ECE; and Shamoon Siddiqui, student team leader, will be interviewed by science correspondent Patrick Regan. Students in New Jersey will soon be able to earn two degrees – one in physics and one in engineering – in just five years, thanks to a new collaboration between New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and New Jersey City University (NJCU). >>

Students will have the opportunity to pursue dual degrees in physics and electrical engineering as the result of an agreement signed today by NJIT President Robert A. Altenkirch and New Jersey City University (NJCU) President Carlos Hernandez (at left).  NJIT will award the B.S. degree in electrical engineering at the end of the fifth year of study and NJCU will award the B.S. degree in physics after the fourth year of study. >>

The New Jersey State Chamber Environment Committee held its public meeting at NJIT on Friday, Dec. 10. The group of about 25 members met in room 3140 of the GITC building. Assemblyman John McKeon, the chairman of the Assembly’s Environment Committee, was a guest speaker. Students enrolled in the New Jersey Youth Corps Brownfields Job Training Program were instructed today on how to put on the protective gear, or moonsuits, that are worn by technicians to clean up brownfields (contaminated old buildings) as part of the health and safety component of the curriculum being taught at NJIT through its Division of Continuing Professional Education. This intensive training program prepares disadvantaged young adults for careers as environmental technicians. >>

More than 1,000 graduates joined the ranks of NJIT alumni at commencement exercises May 26 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), Newark. Lt. Gen. James A. Abrahamson, USAF-Retired, who directed both the Space Shuttle program and “Star Wars” Strategic Defense Initiative, delivered the commencement address and received an honorary doctor of science degree  for his accomplishments during a distinguished career of 33 years in the United States Air Force and his service at  the vanguard of the nation’s space and defense programs. >>

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) architecture student Daisy Kim of Whitfield, CT, recently was awarded a $2,500 New Jersey Carpenter-Contractor Trust (NJCCT) scholarship.  Kim is in her fourth year of completing a five-year architecture program at NJIT’s New Jersey School of Architecture (NJSOA).   “We hope the scholarship will help to bridge the occasional gap between the trades and the designer world,” says NJCCT Director Phil Cooney. “We also hope to forge a stronger partnership between union carpenters, their contractors, and future designers.” >>
