Gale Tenen Spak, PhD, associate vice president of Continuing and Distance Education at NJIT, moderated a panel at the Association of Public Land-grant Universities' Joint Summer meeting of the Commission on Innovation, Competitiveness, and Economic Prosperity and Council on Engagement and Outreach at the Hyatt Regency in Austin, Texas. Spak moderated the session "Technology as a Tool for University Engagement and Outreach" on June 22, at which panelists discussed technology tools – from social networking to engagement web portals – that facilitate economic and community engagement. >>

Free college courses ranging in content from English literature to quantum physics are now available on-line through a consortium started by MIT several years ago known as The Open Courseware Consortium. NJIT has recently been named a member of what has become a worldwide organization. >>
Distinguished Professors Emeriti Starr Roxanne Hiltz and Murray Turoff of NJIT's Information Systems Department are spending the month of January as visiting professors at the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii.  In October they participated as invited keynoters at a workshop on the Future of Higher Education in Romania, held in Bucharest. In November, a visit to Finland included invited presentations by Hiltz on "The Impact of Online Learning and Social Media on Higher Education" at the Finnish Society for Futures Studies, Helsinki; and "Social Media: Characteristics, Social Issues, and Use in Marketing," at the Turku School of Economics. Turoff's invited presentations included: "Emergency Response Information Systems" at Nokia in Helsinki, and a keynote address on the Delphi Method at the annual Millennium Project meeting in Helsinki. "These are exactly the kinds of opportunities we hoped to have when we transitioned to emeritus and emerita status," said Hiltz. "It is quite wonderful to be able to work with colleagues all over the world."  >>

NJIT will break new ground this summer with a new and affordable graduate online tuition rate for out-of-state students. “The new tuition will make it possible for students anywhere in or outside the U.S. to study full or part-time at NJIT,” said Gale Tenen Spak, associate vice president of the Division of Continuing Professional Education. >>
Fascinated by gadgets? Then you won't want to miss out on NJIT's first online iPhone application development course. Offered by the Division of Continuing Professional Education, the 30-hour online course (conducted over 10 weeks) starts May 11, 2009. Registration will be open through May 10, 2009. The cost for the class is $1000. >>
