Two new patents to improve orthogonal space time codes and decode data transmissions of space time spreading were recently awarded to NJIT Distinguished Professor Yeheskel Bar-Ness, executive director of the Elisha Yegal Bar-Ness Center for Wireless Communications and Signal Processing Research.  Co-inventors with Bar-Ness on both patents were NJIT alums Amir Laufer and Kodzovi Acolatse. >>

NJIT Research Professor Reginald Farrow and NJIT Professor Gordon Thomas were the recipients last night of an Edison Patent Award from the Research & Development Council of New Jersey. The event kicked off the Council's 50th Anniversary celebration and honored more than 30 inventors and 13 New Jersey companies and universities. >>

An expert in digital data forensics and information assurance, Yun-Qing Shi, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at NJIT, will number among 30 New Jersey inventors from eight companies and universities to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Awards on Nov. 4. Hosted by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey, the ceremony and reception will take place at the Liberty Science Center.    >>
NJIT professors and alumni will be among the innovators honored this evening at the 22nd Annual New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame Awards ceremony in Hoboken. Timothy Chang, PhD, distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, will receive a Special Award for his achievements in the areas of ultra-high precision systems, genetic systems, robotics and motion control; and Yun-Qing Shi, PhD, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will be recognized for his work in digital forensics and security. Jingjing Zhang, a PhD candidate in NJIT's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will receive the Graduate Student Award. Vikki Hazelwood, PhD, who received her MS from NJIT in 1998, will receive the Advancement of Invention Award for a pioneering process for translational research in medicine and Richard Caizza, who received a certificate in plastics technology from NJIT in 1992, will receive the Inventor of the Year award for his "Single-Handedly Actuatable Safety Shield for Needles" patent. >>

Gorun, PhD, associate professor of chemistry at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), was awarded a patent today for a novel composition of matter. “Functional Coating Compositions of Perfluoroalkyl Perfluoro-Phthalocyanine Compounds” (US Patent Number 7,670,684) discloses a new self-contained subclass of molecules. These new materials are comprised of organic scaffolds with metal centers, which can be applied as either an opaque or transparent hydrophobic coating. >>

Researchers at NJIT will soon find it easier to research, apply for and obtain patents thanks to $463,938 awarded last month to NJIT by the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology. “We'll use these funds to promote the creation of new technology businesses in New Jersey through increased technology transfer and commercialization of inventions developed at NJIT,” said Judith Sheft, associate vice president, technology development. >>
