Yankees Manager Joe Torre visited New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) yesterday to herald a new partnership between NJIT’s baseball team, the Highlanders, and the Newark Bears.

Astride his motorcycle, NJIT President Robert A. Altenkirch led a procession of students, staff, and the Highlander mascot to watch the Newark Bears shut out the Camden Riversharks at Riverfront Stadium yesterday afternoon. Altenkirch threw out the first ball and NJIT received special recognition at the game.

NJIT hosted its inaugural Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night on Friday, May 14, 2004 at Riverfront Stadium in downtown Newark. More than 200 faculty members, staff and their families enjoyed a two-hour buffet meal and watched the Newark Bears play against the Pennsylvania Road Warriors. NJIT President Robert A. Altenkirch threw out the first ball. In addition, the 2004 employee service award recipients were congratulated.

NJIT’s Baseball Team, The Highlanders, Will Play at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium

It’s new turf - a field of dreams - for New Jersey Institute of Technology’s (NJIT) baseball team, the Highlanders, who will play their home games at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, Newark. Dignitaries will attend the press conference (see below), but don’t expect a staid affair. Bear’s mascot Rip N’ Ruppert will sign a contract with the Highlander, NJIT’s mascot. After the signing, the two fleet-footed mascots will dance a tango, play some catch and frolic. Highlander baseball players, in uniform, will be on hand.
