NJIT's Mengchu Zhou Proposes Using Petri Nets as a Solution to Automation Problems in Manufacturing in Upcoming IEEE Journal

An expert in robotics and automation problems, especially those involving manufacturing systems, NJIT Distinguished Professor and IEEE Fellow Mengchu Zhou will have two articles published in the upcoming proceedings of the 2013 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation. Both papers were recently presented at this conference.

The Board of Trustees of New Jersey Institute of Technology has approved $200 million in construction and infrastructure projects on the university’s Newark campus, designed to enhance and expand NJIT’s role as the state’s science and technology university and a leader in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and research. The university will apply to the Secretary of Higher Education for $152 million from the Building Our Future Bond Act, state revolving funds and other sources to support the projects.

NJIT Professors and Alumni Honored Tonight at New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame Awards

NJIT professors and alumni will be among the innovators honored this evening at the 22nd Annual New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame Awards ceremony in Hoboken. Timothy Chang, PhD, distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, will receive a Special Award for his achievements in the areas of ultra-high precision systems, genetic systems, robotics and motion control; and Yun-Qing Shi, PhD, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will be recognized for his work in digital forensics and security. Jingjing Zhang, a PhD candidate in NJIT's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will receive the Graduate Student Award. Vikki Hazelwood, PhD, who received her MS from NJIT in 1998, will receive the Advancement of Invention Award for a pioneering process for translational research in medicine and Richard Caizza, who received a certificate in plastics technology from NJIT in 1992, will receive the Inventor of the Year award for his "Single-Handedly Actuatable Safety Shield for Needles" patent.

Harris, MD, of Houston, the veteran of two space shuttle missions and the first African-American to walk in space, visited NJIT today, first teaching in the morning, then speaking to youngsters participating in the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp. NJIT once again served as one of 30 locations throughout the nation and the only NJ venue for the two-week residential camp, which offers middle-school students a first-hand experience with experiments, role models and innovative programs to stimulate their interest in engineering and science as a potential career path.

Distinguished Professors Emeriti Starr Roxanne Hiltz and Murray Turoff of NJIT's Information Systems Department are spending the month of January as visiting professors at the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii. In October they participated as invited keynoters at a workshop on the Future of Higher Education in Romania, held in Bucharest. In November, a visit to Finland included invited presentations by Hiltz on "The Impact of Online Learning and Social Media on Higher Education" at the Finnish Society for Futures Studies, Helsinki; and "Social Media: Characteristics, Social Issues, and Use in Marketing," at the Turku School of Economics. Turoff's invited presentations included: "Emergency Response Information Systems" at Nokia in Helsinki, and a keynote address on the Delphi Method at the annual Millennium Project meeting in Helsinki. "These are exactly the kinds of opportunities we hoped to have when we transitioned to emeritus and emerita status," said Hiltz. "It is quite wonderful to be able to work with colleagues all over the world."

Students from India's Heritage Institute Gain Hands-On Training at NJIT's Summer Research Experience Symposium

NJIT conducted a summer research program in partnership with the Heritage Institute of Technology (HITK) in Kolkata, India. The 20 students enrolled in NJIT’s Undergraduate Research Experience Symposium were able to participate in a state-of-the-art research facility with world-class faculty. They were accompanied by Srabanti Basu, a senior lecturer in biotechnology at HITK. The program was initiated and managed by Durga Misra, PhD, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NJIT, who also encouraged the participation of faculty and the Albert Dorman Honors College students who mentored the HITK students after hours in their residence hall. “The Summer Research Experience is a rare opportunity to receive hands-on training with NJIT professors and students at the university’s facilities,” said Misra. “A group of three students worked in NJIT’s new Vincent A. Stabile Systems Engineering and Management Laboratories to gain experience with the Stabile Laboratories’ Festo System.” Student research projects included low-power microchip design, drug delivery systems, nanoelectronics, ultrafiltration to scalable web search, clean slate Internet design and management systems analysis.

MSPTC Students Awarded Distance Learning Scholarships
Michele Fields and Hilary Deblak, students in the Master of Science in Professional and Technical Communication (MSPTC) program at NJIT, were awarded scholarships through the Go The Distance Scholarship Contest, the first merit-based scholarship exclusively for distance degree students. Michele and Hilary won two out of the three first-year graduate awards. "This award recognizes the outstanding work of our distance learning students," said Nancy Walters Coppola, associate professor in the humanities department and director of the MSPTC program. "Our master's degree is one of the first completely online programs in technical communication and continues to attract exceptional students."
Jackson Receives Minority Achievers Award
Jesse Jackson, executive director of the Pre-College Consortium at NJIT, received the New Jersey Minority Achievers Award on November 18, 2004.
NJIT Student Elected to National Executive Board of Phi Eta Sigma
David Nare, president of NJIT's Phi Eta Sigma Chapter, was elected to the honor society's National Executive Board at its convention held last month in Savannah, Georgia. Nare, who is the first NJIT student to hold national office in Phi Eta Sigma, will serve as a board member for two years and help to develop the program for the honor society's next convention in 2006.

Black, chair of the department of neuroscience and cell research at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey- Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, discussed recent breakthroughs in stem cell research. He talked about the it might bring for treatments of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injuries, birth defects, and other degenerative diseases. Treena Livingston Arinzeh, PhD, NJIT assistant professor of biomedical engineering, also spoke. In introducing Arinzeh, Black called tissue engineering “the next level” in bio-medical research. Arinzeh described how her studies point the way to “off the shelf” therapies for broken bones and spinal cord injuries. Arinzeh recently received the 2003 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers for her research on adult stem cells.

Solar and Space Weather Radiophysics Current Status and Future Developments, published by Springer Publishing Company, is a 400-page hard-cover text which is part of a series about astrophysics and space science. Gary’s co-editor is Christoph Keller, associate astronomer at the National Solar Observatory, Tucson.
