Three life science inventions that may one day heal wounds faster, improve surgical outcomes and build stronger muscles took $10,500 in prize money for further research and development at NJIT’s recent TechQuest/Innovation Day. The inventions competed against 30 developed by undergraduate teams.

Although widespread rebuilding in the hard-hit New York metro region from Super Storm Sandy has not yet begun, NJIT Assistant Professor Mohamed Mahgoub, PhD, PE, says when the hammers start swinging, it’s time to look at autoclaved aerated concrete. The material, best known as AAC, has been heralded as the building material of the new millennium. It’s a lightweight, easily-crafted manufactured stone, strong enough to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes when reinforced with steel.

Baquerizo joined Senator Teresa Ruiz, NJ Legislator of the 29th Legislative District in congratulating the Technology High School students. “The world you are about to enter is constantly changing and diverse," Baquerizo told the Class of 2010. "We don’t have to see the world to understand that it is unbalanced. We can’t change the world without changing one community at a time. I challenge you to go out and change the communities around you, be of service, help your fellow brothers and sisters, come back and be a role model to Newark youth. Donald H. Sebastian, interim provost and senior vice president for research and development and Judith Sheft, associate vice president for technology development, were awarded the title of Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Commerce and International Relations by the Universidad Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (UIGV) in Lima, Peru. They were invited by Daniel Jara on behalf of the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of NJ (SHCC), which co-hosted the First USA-Peru Trade & Investment Forum Peruvian Products Exhibition. The event marked the beginning of an international initiative designed to help bring awareness as well as to showcase selected products of Peru, international trade opportunities, and the information necessary to trade internationally to SHCC members. “The objective is for NJIT to form a relationship with UIGV to help them develop incubation and extension programs that can move the country’s economy from one of exporting raw materials to one that captures more of the value chain,” said Sebastian.

Vertical Farming Expert Opens Fall 2009 Technology and Society Forum Series at NJIT

Dickson D. Despommier, a professor of environmental health sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, discussed vertical farms, the agriculture for the 21st century, at the NJIT Technology and Society Forum Series yesterday. Vertical urban farms could help to repair many of the world’s damaged ecosystems and moderate global climate change, says Despommier. Social benefits include fostering a sustainable urban environment that encourages good health, new employment opportunities, fewer abandoned lots and buildings, cleaner air, and an abundant supply of safe drinking water. Despommier’s lecture drew a large number of community organizers, including Newark Councilman Donald M. Payne, City of Newark Sustainability Officer Chelsea Arbusher, and Greater Newark Conservancy Executive Director Robin Dougherty, in addition to representatives from the Trust for Public Land, Newark Public Schools, Rutgers University and the Ironbound Community Corporation.

Inventor Daniel Henderson Joins with Smithsonian in Acquisition of Wireless Picturephone Technology Prototypes

Daniel A. Henderson, president of PhoneTel Communications, Inc. and a member of the Albert Dorman Honors College Board of Visitors, assisted the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in the acquisition of two prototypes and related documentation for a pioneering wireless picturephone technology developed in 1993. Henderson recently was awarded six U.S. patents for innovation incorporated in the wireless system and device. The donation adds to a previous collection of wireless technology that Henderson donated to the museum’s Information Technology and Communications Division in 2003.

New Jersey Institute of Technology Named the State's Homeland Security Technology Systems Center

Governor James E. McGreevey issued an executive order today designating New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) the state's Homeland Security Technology Systems Center. The order indicated that NJIT will immediately begin serving as the state's homeland security consultant for technology evaluation. The university will develop prototypes of integrated homeland security systems for testing, demonstration and training.
