An expert in digital data forensics and information assurance, Yun-Qing Shi, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at NJIT, will number among 30 New Jersey inventors from eight companies and universities to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Awards on Nov. 4. Hosted by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey, the ceremony and reception will take place at the Liberty Science Center.    >>
NJIT professors and alumni will be among the innovators honored this evening at the 22nd Annual New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame Awards ceremony in Hoboken. Timothy Chang, PhD, distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, will receive a Special Award for his achievements in the areas of ultra-high precision systems, genetic systems, robotics and motion control; and Yun-Qing Shi, PhD, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will be recognized for his work in digital forensics and security. Jingjing Zhang, a PhD candidate in NJIT's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will receive the Graduate Student Award. Vikki Hazelwood, PhD, who received her MS from NJIT in 1998, will receive the Advancement of Invention Award for a pioneering process for translational research in medicine and Richard Caizza, who received a certificate in plastics technology from NJIT in 1992, will receive the Inventor of the Year award for his "Single-Handedly Actuatable Safety Shield for Needles" patent. >>

Yoshihiko Takahashi, PhD, a professor of mechanical systems engineering at the Kanagawa Institute of Technology in Kanagawa, Japan, will discuss "Sustainable Technologies for Humans and the Earth" at the North Jersey IEEE/NJIT Control Systems Seminar on Sept 10, 5-6 p.m. in 202 ECEC. Takahashi's research interests are in human-assisted robotic systems, fuel cell electrical vehicles, and applications of sustainable energy. A liquid dispensing system useful for identifying medical woes ranging from cancer to bird flu will garner an award for two NJ inventors this week. The researchers Timothy Chang, electrical and computer engineering professor at NJIT, and Peter Tolias, executive director, Institute of Genomic Medicine at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, will be honored Nov. 7 by the Research and Development Council of New Jersey for their patent to develop this new system. >>

New Jersey Network (NJN) News will air a segment tonight about a team of NJIT students who are designing an unmanned vehicle that will compete in the Grand Challenge, a 175-mile race in the desert. Atam Dhawan, PhD, chairman of the electrical and computer engineering (ECE) department; Timothy Chang, PhD, associate professor, ECE; and Shamoon Siddiqui, student team leader, will be interviewed by science correspondent Patrick Regan. The report will air first at 5:30 p.m. on PBS news, then again at 6 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Channels 23, 50, 52 and 58.  >>

Chang, working with Patricia Soteropoulos, PhD, Director of the Public Health Research Institute's Center for Applied Genomics, has developed a robotic technique for getting genetic material onto slides precisely, quickly, and cheaply. >>
