The Research and Development Council of NJ presented one of its highest awards this week to Kamalesh K. Sirkar, PhD, distinguished chemical engineering professor at NJIT. Sirkar, an internationally regarded expert in the field of membrane separation technologies, holds a total of 22 patents; he received the honor for his patent to remove volatile organic pollutants from waste gas streams produced from manufacturing processes before the toxic pollutants are released to the atmosphere. >>

The NJIT community mourns the loss of Herbert M. Iris, ’51, a major benefactor to the athletics program at NJIT and the national chair of the Highlanders Athletics Campaign. Iris served in the Navy after graduating from high school and received a BS degree in civil engineering from the Newark College of Engineering in 1951. He started Iris Construction Co. in 1959, building industrial and office complexes across northern New Jersey. >>

NJIT Students Take First and Third Place in ASME Mechanical Engineering CompetitionNJIT continued its run of success at the annual American Society of Mechanical Engineers Regional Student Conference on April 1, 2006 at Fairleigh Dickinson University. For the eighth time in the last eleven years, NJIT mechanical engineering students captured first place in the National Student Design Contest. The design involved the development of a prototype device for cast fishing for a quadriplegic using sip and puff technology. The winning team of John Kurdyla and Alejandro Perez will represent ASME Region II at the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) in Chicago in November. NJIT’s team of Eric Jakubik and Eric Shapiro also honored the university with a third-place finish in the contest. >>
