History Professor To Receive Award for Book on 18th-Century Scottish Authors and Publishers Richard B. Sher, distinguished professor of history and chair of the federated history department at NJIT, will receive the Leo Gershoy Award for The Enlightenment and the Book: Scottish Authors and Their Publishers in Eighteenth-Century Britain, Ireland, and America (University of Chicago Press, 2006).  Dr. Sher will be presented with the award at the 122nd annual meeting of the American Historical Association on January 4, 2008 in Washington, DC. >>
NJIT's Bruce Bukiet, the World Series Forecaster, is once again banging away on his keyboard, this time to name winners of Major League Baseball's Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Cy Young awards for the 2007 season. >>
NJIT took time over the weekend to honor its athletics past while also announcing plans to enhance its athletics future. Reflecting on past excellence, NJIT added five alumni to the Athletics Hall of Fame, while also recognizing a professor for his support of NJIT athletics at the annual induction dinner held on campus. Looking ahead, officials unveiled the Highlanders Athletics Campaign, a $5-million effort to ensure future excellence for NJIT athletics, as part of the evening's ceremonies. >>

Chemical Engineering Professor Receives 2007 Robert Swanson Award Reginald PT (Reg) Tomkins, PhD, a professor and interim chairperson in the department of chemical engineering, was the 2007 recipient of the annual Robert Swanson Award for his continuing support of the athletic program in his 30 years on the NJIT faculty. Named for the late NJIT professor and athletic director, the Bob Swanson Award is presented to the faculty or staff member who has shown continued support for the Highlander athletic program. AIChE at NJIT Receives Award for Outstanding Student Chapter   The NJIT student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) received an Outstanding Student Chapter award from the national organization. The awards are presented annually to those Student Chapters that show an exceptional level of participation, enthusiasm, program quality, professionalism, and involvement in the university and community. Humanities Professor Publishes Book on Founder of Macedonian Dynasty Norman Tobias, PhD, an associate professor in the department of humanities, has published Basil I, Founder of the Macedonian Dynasty: A Study of the Political and Military History of the Byzantine Empire in the Ninth Century (Mellen Press, 2007). The book provides a re-examination of the life and accomplishments of Emperor Basil the First. Read more. >>

NJIT Receives Autodesk Award for Entirely Digital Approach to Architecture Education NJIT has received the Autodesk, Inc. Revit BIM Experience Award for its commitment to teaching an entirely digital approach to architecture. The Revit BIM Experience Award honors organizations, including commercial architecture, engineering and construction firms, educational institutions, and individuals for their innovation and excellence in implementing the Revit platform for building information modeling (BIM). NJIT uses Revit Architecture to demonstrate the relationship between design and building to its students and leverages technology in the service of design to create better architects and architecture. >>

Math Professor Receives Van Houten Award for Teaching ExcellenceBruce Bukiet, PhD, associate dean of the College of Science and Liberal Arts and associate professor in the department of mathematical sciences at NJIT, received the 2007 Robert W. Van Houten Award for Teaching Excellence. Recipients of the award are selected by alumni who have graduated from NJIT within the past five years. >>

NJIT Development Director Honored by North Essex Chamber of Commerce   Billy McDermott, director of development for NJIT's School of Management, received the President's Award at the North Essex Chamber of Commerce Leadership Recognition Banquet on May 16, 2007. Three Highlanders Receive Independent Baseball Academic Honors NJIT baseball athletes Austin DeRogatis, Rob Pietrocola and PJ Saporito were named to the NCAA Division I Independent All-Academic team for 2007. The NCAA Division I Academic All-Independent team was selected by sports information directors at member institutions. Nominations from each school were accepted for student-athletes who had a least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average, had reached at least a sophomore academic standing and were a starter or key reserve for their respective program. >>
A team of NJIT engineering students received the Egor Popov Award for Structural Innovation and ranked ninth overall in the 2007 Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) Seismic Design Competition for Undergraduates in Civil and Structural Engineering. The competition was held on Feb. 8-9 at the EERI Annual Meeting in Los Angeles. >>
Donald H. Sebastian, Sr. PhD, senior vice president for research and development at NJIT received the “Academia Award” from Strengthening the Mid-Atlantic Region for Tomorrow (SMART), at the organization's annual awards banquet held in Wilmington on Jan. 5, 2007. >>

Humanities Professor Receives Award for Book on Writing Assessment
Norbert Elliot, PhD, a professor in the department of humanities, received the Stephen P. Witte Award for Excellence in Writing Assessment Scholarship for his book On A Scale: A Social History of Writing Assessment (New York: Peter Lang, 2005).  Instituted last year, the Witte Award is given on annual basis by the Journal of Writing Assessment. >>
