Three graduating seniors were awarded NJIT's highest honor for earning the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA) during the university's 2008 commencement at the Prudential Center. Biological sciences major Krystian Jarosz, of Colonia, information technology major Amy A. Steed, of Lakewood, and computer engineering major Oscar Tapia, of Clifton, all attained a 4.0 GPA. >>

"You'll find that as you transition from the nurturing, intuitive world of academe into the outside world, it may not be easy to maintain your integrity,” Thom Mayne told more than 2,100 graduating students and their families at the 2008 commencement ceremony on May 17 at the Prudential Center in Newark. The 2005 Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate, who is the founder and design principal of Morphosis, an interdisciplinary and collective architectural practice in Los Angeles, received an honorary doctor of humane letters. “Aim to keep your creativity alive and remember, no one else will ever be you,” Mayne said. NJIT also awarded honorary doctorates to Norman Li, PhD, president of NL Chemical Technology Inc. in Illinois, and longtime Newark historian Elizabeth Del Tufo. >>
During Chris Sakowski's first year at Marlboro High School, Marlboro, he signed up for an elective class in business management. But since he was the only student to register, the school cancelled the class and asked him to choose another. Electronics was his lucky pick. “I immediately fell in love with the class, the teacher, and the subject matter,” recalled Sakowski, now a senior. “And I've not lost an ounce of passion since then.” >>
The University Commencement Ceremony for NJIT will be held Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Prudential Center, Newark from 9 a.m.-noon. During the ceremony, more than 2,000 honorary doctoral degrees and earned doctoral, master's, and bachelor's degrees will be conferred on the Class of 2008. >>
