Alexis Goldman, a project manager at Solutions Architecture in Newark and a 2002 graduate of NJIT's College of Architecture and Design, built a "Jumbotron" made entirely from unopened cans of food in an eight-hour Build Day as part of the CANstruction design competition. At the close of the exhibitions, the cans were donated to local food banks. >>

An expert in digital data forensics and information assurance, Yun-Qing Shi, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at NJIT, will number among 30 New Jersey inventors from eight companies and universities to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Awards on Nov. 4. McGowan '88, president of McGowan Builders, Inc. and a member of the NJIT Board of Overseers, to its 2010 Irish Education 100, a list of the leading figures in education across North America. Peter Ma '07, a software engineer at Casting Networks, Inc. in Los Angeles, is seeking votes for his mobile application in the Apps for Healthy Kids Contest. Ma, who received his BS in computer engineering in 2007, recently entered and won a contest that was hosted by Snaptic and Hopelab, and also sponsored by TEDPrize; the challenge was to build an android application that promotes movement. Ma's "Earn the Stars" mobile application is a merit-based tool for educating, motivating, recognizing and rewarding children to make good choices about nutrition and participating in physical activities. "We made sure to highlight that nutrition and sports are the key," says Ma, a former captain of the NJIT men's soccer team.  >>

A robot sculpture by Matthew Gosser '03, an adjunct professor in NJIT's New Jersey School of Architecture, will be featured in "Collect This," an assemblage of works that represent the ideas and boldness of the New Newark at the 239 Collective gallery. Norma J. Clayton '81, vice president of learning, training and development at The Boeing Company and a member of the NJIT Board of Overseers, will be a guest speaker at the Career Communication Group Alumni Reunion on June 30 in Baltimore. Clayton, who graduated from NJIT with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, received the university's Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2006. >>

A team comprised of New Jersey School of Architecture alumni Justin Foster '08, Lauren Page '08, and Phil Kuehne '07 of the design collective KIT won first place in the New York Architecture League's design charette competition. Their winning design, which features hundreds of hula hoops forming a connected canopy, will be part of a temporary summer installation in the backyard of the SUPERFRONT art gallery to host events for New York City Explorers, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit group.   >>

Advanced radar, laser, electro-optic, infrared warning and countermeasure systems number among the technical innovations that Robert Zanzalari, of  Barnegat, has developed and deployed during his civilian service with the U.S. Army’s Communications Electronics, Research Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC). Such achievements illustrate why Zanzalari received on May 22, 2010 the NJIT Alumni Achievement Award.  Such advances have increased the survivability of ground vehicles and aircraft, including the Army’s large helicopter fleet. >>

“Don’t even mention seafoam green to me today,” Edmund Hecht says with a laugh, recalling the institutional color he applied in copious amounts with a Newark College of Engineering (NCE) painting crew in the mid-1950s. It was one of the part-time jobs he had while studying mechanical engineering. Hecht also worked in the college bookstore and on the switchboard. In more recent years, he’s returned to the classroom as a teacher ― sharing a wide range of knowledge at colleges in Texas and as a Fulbright Scholar in Ukraine. >>

The same technology makes it possible to use an ATM and to pay for riding on a subway or bus with a paper fare card. And it’s all thanks to the role played by NJIT alum Arthur Hahn, formerly of Matawan and Edison, in the introduction of this indispensable innovation.  For this body of work, Hahn received on May 22, 2010, the NJIT Alumni Achievement Award.   Hahn now lives in San Diego. >>

A 1948 grad in chemical engineering, Benjamin D’Armiento, of Toms River, formerly of Clifton, has worked in a field literally full of color. For more than three decades, D’Armiento, who received the NJIT Alumni Achievement Award on May 22, 2010, earned professional prominence with dyes and colorants essential for applications such as printing and automotive finishing. His life has had figurative touches of color too ― as a fencing champion, community activist and enthusiastic tour guide for foreign visitors to the U.S. >>

Austin Alvarez has seen a lot of shocking situations over more than 40 years at Electric Boat Corporation in Connecticut. A division of General Dynamics, Electric Boat designs, builds and maintains nuclear submarines for the U.S. Navy. Alvarez, of Gales Ferry, CT, a staff engineer and technical leader for shock and structures development, received on May 22, 2010, an Alumni Achievement award from NJIT. The award highlighted his vital work affecting the safety and survivability of the Navy’s undersea fleet. >>

Humberto “Humby” Baquerizo '95, of North Bergen, assistant director of the Campus Center overseeing the Office of Conference Services and Programs, presented at the Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority National Convention 2010 on June 12 at the Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel. “The Evolution: 35 Years of a Lambda Lady Legacy” was the theme of this year's conference. Baquerizo's two presentations were entitled “Working with University Administrators” and “The Millennials: The Future of Fraternities and Sororities.”  >>

As Rinaldi tells it, “The story line is an odd one: The boat’s owner wants to hunt pirates off the coast of Somalia. Staten Island plays the part of Somalia and my yacht, Vivere—which means “to live”—was chosen by L&O to portray this questionable adventure. Vivere spends a lot of time cruising around Manhattan and docking at Chelsea Piers where Law & Order studios are located, it did not take Law & Order's scouts long to spy Vivere. Hence, she would temporarily abandon her gentle and sybaritic life to become a pirate hunter. The producers outfitted the yacht with turret-mounted machine guns, AK 47s, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, and a bevy of bikini-clad girls.
