Daniel Palma of Paterson and Benjamin Gross of Lambertville, two juniors from NJIT's School of Art + Design, were selected to serve in the Student Volunteer Program at the Association of Computing Machinery’s 2010 SIGGRAPH Conference. Admission to the Student Volunteer Program is highly competitive and provides participants access to network with industry leaders and the opportunity to attend short courses, presentations of production case studies, and technical paper sessions. Students provide a minimum of 30 hours of service during the conference, which started on July 24 and concluded on July 30 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Palma and Gross are both third-year students in the Entertainment Track in NJIT’s new BA program in Digital Design. For the bilingual Palma, an EOP student and past recipient of a Director’s Scholarship in the School of Art + Design, this marked the second consecutive year he was selected to participate at SIGGRAPH; 2010 was the first SIGGRAPH conference for Gross, a student in the Albert Dorman Honors College at NJIT. >>

Gale Tenen Spak, PhD, associate vice president of Continuing and Distance Education at NJIT, moderated a panel at the Association of Public Land-grant Universities' Joint Summer meeting of the Commission on Innovation, Competitiveness, and Economic Prosperity and Council on Engagement and Outreach at the Hyatt Regency in Austin, Texas. Spak moderated the session "Technology as a Tool for University Engagement and Outreach" on June 22, at which panelists discussed technology tools – from social networking to engagement web portals – that facilitate economic and community engagement. >>

Think NJIT when it’s time to brush up on certification skills. Four non-credit courses in iPhone application development, underground storage tank regulations, online pen Source Unix certification, and Solar Panel Installations will be available from NJIT starting as early as June and throughout the summer. Each course is open to the general public and will help state residents gain skills to seek and keep jobs.  >>

NJIT will launch this fall a new 12-credit graduate certificate in sustainability policy and environmental management. The program will require students to complete four courses. Maurie Cohen, PhD, associate professor in the department of chemistry and environmental science, will be the program coordinator. >>

Tromping around the classroom in oversized moon suits, a class of disadvantaged, young adults from New Jersey's inner cities has been studying this past week at NJIT how to start a career cleaning up hazardous wastes.  The program, run under the auspices of the New Jersey Youth Corps, is part of a larger four-week course of study.  It aims to put people to work, plus teach them life skills, including how to complete a high school diploma.   Recent program graduates will soon head to the Gulf of Mexico to clean up the oil spill. >>

The White House announced yesterday that New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will receive more than $23 million of the $2 billion allocated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to achieve widespread meaningful use of health IT and facilitate use of an electronic health record (EHR) by every person by the year 2014. >>

Last summer NJIT launched an affordable graduate online tuition rate for out-of-state students. “The new online tuition makes it possible for students anywhere in or outside the US to study full or part-time at NJIT,” said Gale Tenen Spak, associate vice president of the Division of Continuing Professional Education. Spak manages the program. “This is a good opportunity to access programs which offer the right courses for the right jobs and which are taught at a nationally-ranked science and technology university.” >>

An NJIT alumna of Haitian ancestry, who returns summers to teach in NJIT’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), has just returned from a 10-day visit to Haiti. Mechanical engineer Darlene Clovis, who works at Picatinny Arsenal, flew to Haiti with Engineers Without Borders to evaluate the safety of buildings. >>

Free college courses ranging in content from English literature to quantum physics are now available on-line through a consortium started by MIT several years ago known as The Open Courseware Consortium.   >>
