From reviving student communities to co-inventing solar water systems, NJIT students aim to get out into the world and make life better for people. Some 11 students who shined the most when it comes to helping others recently were feted at the annual Highlander Student Achievement Awards.

When Kate Boardman, of Montclair, and Paul Rodriguez, of Harrison, march at NJIT’s upcoming May 17 graduation at the Prudential Center, their minds may wander to memories of their work as fledgling mechanical engineers removing bacteria from drinking water and halting water-borne illnesses in a poor Haitian village. Working under the auspices of Engineers Without Borders (EWB), the two made several visits there over the past two years.

Paul Rodriguez, of Harrison, a graduating senior at NJIT, received honorable mention at the NJIT Dana Knox Student Research Showcase on April 14, 2010, for his research project to develop a composite material made entirely from recycled glass and plastics as a replacement for concrete masonry blocks.
