The mission of the Health Care and Aging Environments
research team is to examine the role of the environment in treating
and maintaining the health and well-being of special needs populations
- the aging and people with physical, intellectual and emotional
disabilities - and their caregivers. Studies explore the range of
settings in which people live and receive health care, including
private residences, group homes, day care facilities, long-term
care environments and hospitals.
The division was established in 1992 with a grant
from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Major projects have
included studies of the home environments of people with Alzheimer's
disease and of children with physical disabilities, as well
as the impact of special interventions, such as nostalgic music
and videos, on people with dementia. Available materials include:
A House for All Children, a research-based manual and
companion video for parents raising a child with a physical
disability at home, and Homes that Help, a manual for
family members caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease.
These resources offer advice for creating supportive homes through
design, assistive technologies and behavioral strategies.
Current activities focus on creating design guidelines
for an 'Ideal Home for an Adult with a Disability', and
an analysis of how the home environment can assist aging in
place with a intellectual disability.
