           DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS

It is an instructor's responsibility to maintain discipline and to insist upon ethical and professional conduct in his/her classes.  Thus, s/he should take reasonable steps necessary to maintain control of his/her class.  When the instructor believes that there is reason to discipline or counsel a student, s/he is empowered to undertake any reasonable course of action.  In doing so, the instructor may optionally consult with the departmental chairperson or associate chairperson, with faculty colleagues, with the Dean of Students or Associate, with the Director of the Counseling Center, or with any member of the Committee on Professional Conduct for assistance and advice in any case.  However, the instructor remains personally responsible for his/her disciplinary decisions and actions as much as for his/her academic or professional actions.

An instructor acts only as the initiator of the procedures for dealing with serious disciplinary matters.  The instructor will inform the student of his/her intention to file formal charges.  The purpose of these procedural regulations is to protect the individual instructor from the consequences of any unwitting, yet legally actionable, unilateral, disciplinary action which might deny the student his/her rights under the due process of the law.
