PEER MENTOR SERVICES: STOP-IN CENTER
Peer Mentor Services, located in the Stop-In Center, provide on-the-spot information and assistance to students about many aspects of college life. Peer mentors are a diverse group of fellow-students who are ready to listen to your concerns or problems, whether academic, social or personal. Peer mentors have been trained to listen and understand, protect your privacy, provide information, help you think things over, and refer you to other services for further assistance when appropriate.
In addition to listening to your concerns, peer mentors can answer informational questions and/or provide you with printed materials about many topics such as campus social events, stress, alcohol and drug abuse, managing test anxiety, bus and train schedules, campus and community cultural events, etc. If peer mentors cannot answer your questions, they will try to find out where you can go for that information.
Peer mentors are here to provide short-term assistance (one to three meetings), but they are not counselors. If counseling would be helpful for your situation, they will recommend that you speak with a counselor or psychologist at the NJIT Counseling Center. Peer mentors know the Counseling Center staff and would be glad to introduce you to someone there.
NJIT students are encouraged to stop by the Stop-In Center on the lower level of the Campus Center, room B65, to talk with a peer mentor and look through our informational materials. If you prefer, you may speak with a peer mentor on the phone at (973) 596-3422. Peer mentors are available in the Stop-In Center weekdays during fall and spring semesters. You can get more information about us by logging onto <counseling.njit.edu> and clicking on “Peer Mentors” on the left-side menu.
