NSO Frequently Asked Questions

What is New Student Orientation?

New Student Orientation (NSO) is a mandatory, two-part orientation program for new NJIT undergraduate students. During the program, you'll meet current and new NJIT students, faculty, and staff to help you learn the skills necessary to be successful here - both academic and social. You'll also meet with your advisor to understand the expectations of NJIT and receive guidance on academic planning. You'll even learn about innovative research and programs, register for courses, and obtain advice on majors, minors, and fields of study!

Do I have to attend New Student Orientation?

New Student Orientation is mandatory for all incoming freshmen. It's the only way for you to receive the information you need to begin your studies at NJIT, receive academic advisement, and get registered for classes.

Do I have to stay overnight?

No, the program sessions for NSO 1.0 will go until 6 pm. The NSO 2.0 program on both days will go until 5 pm. Students are welcome to stay for evening festivities.

How long is New Student Orientation?

NSO is a two-part program. The first part, NSO 1.0, is a one-day program occurring in July or August. Check-in will begin at 8:30 am and ends at 6 pm. The welcome session will begin at 9:00 am. NSO 2.0 is part two of orientation, and it takes place on the Thursday and Friday on the week prior to the first day of class. Detailed schedules are sent out a week before your designated program.

How do I register for New Student Orientation?

Invitations to NSO will begin to be emailed to deposited students who have taken their placement test or receive a test exemption starting in late April on a rolling weekly basis. Only students who have paid their deposits (tuitiondeposit.njit.edu) and who have taken their math placement test or received an exemption will be invited to register for New Student Orientation.

What if I have not received information regarding NSO in the mail or by email?

If you have taken your placement test or received an exemption and did not receive a registration message within a week, please contact NSO by email at orientation@njit.edu or by phone at 973-596-5364.

Can I leave early or arrive late to New Student Orientation?

It is the responsibility of the students attending NSO to make arrangements to attend the entire program; excuses such as 'I have work' or 'I have an appointment' will not be accepted and you may have to attend another NSO program.

What if I can't attend on the assigned dates for my college?

To have the best orientation experience possible, you should try your best to attend your college's assigned orientation dates. However, if you cannot attend your college-specific dates, you will be permitted to register for another program. If you have any additional questions or concerns please contact us at orientation@njit.eduYou will not be able to make up NSO 2.0, therefore, please plan accordingly.

Your hold remains on your account until it is time to register for classes the following semester. This prevents students from changing their schedule on their own. The Freshman hold will be replaced by an Advisor Hold.
