Do most parents/guardians attend Family Orientation?

Approximately 1,000 parents attended orientation last year. The choice of whether or not to attend Family Orientation depends on each parent or guardian. Parents and guardians of incoming first year students are strongly encouraged to attend. This is certainly one of the first steps in showing support for your student.

As a parent/guardian, what will I be doing during Family Orientation?

You will have a chance to gain your own introduction to campus life, as well as the opportunity to meet representatives of various student support departments. You will also learn about the general academic requirements and policies, course placement and NJIT’s advising system. You will also have an opportunity to meet key campus staff members who support first year students, and become familiar with student services and facilities, food service plans, financial aid, career planning and student activities.

What does the cost cover for Family Orientation?

The cost is $32.64 and covers the expense of breakfast, lunch, closing session, materials, program staff, and the information sessions you will attend as part of Family Orientation. The cost is all-inclusive and non-negotiable.

How do I register for Family Orientation?

Your student must register you for Family Orientation when they register for Freshman Orientation online through the Eventbrite registration system.

Can I bring an additional guest to Family Orientation?

Yes, you can bring additional guests to Parent Orientation. The cost is the same - $32.64 per person. Please identify additional guests on the registration. 

Can I make changes to my Family Orientation reservation?

Yes. To make changes to your registration, you can click on the link on your confirmation email. Please call us at 973-596-5364 or email us at for any questions.

Can I request a special meal due to my food allergies?

Yes, please indicate if you need a special meal when registering. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide Halal meals during Freshman and Family Orientations, however we can provide vegetarian options.

Do I have to attend all of the Family Orientation sessions?

Parents/guardians may choose which sessions they wish to attend, however, students are required to attend the entire program.

I live a long way from NJIT - is there any overnight lodging on campus?

Parents and students who live out of the area must make reservations to stay overnight on campus one week in advance. Parents and students must bring their own bedding, towels, etc. There is no charge for this service. For parents and students coming from far away who do not wish to bring bedding, towels, etc, the cost is $10. Please contact the Residence Life Office at 973-596-3039 to make reservations.

Are there any hotels near the university where I can make a reservation?

Yes, there are area hotels where reservations can be made.

Can I meet with a representative from Financial Aid while I am on campus?

Yes, Financial Aid will provide individual sessions for parents as well as a general workshop which will address questions and concerns. 

Will I have the opportunity to talk with my student’s academic advisor?

During Family Orientation, the academic advisors are involved in advising sessions for the students attending Freshman Orientation. Parents will not be permitted to attend student sessions. Where can I park while I am attending Family Orientation?

Parents and students are permitted to park in the NJIT Parking Deck. There is no charge, and no permit is needed.

Will I have the opportunity to see my student throughout the day?

There will be a joint student/parent session at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day during the closing session. Parent sessions will be separate and geared toward your role as a parent or guardian.

Will I be able to see a dorm room in the residence halls?

Yes, there will be an optional tour of a dorm room at the end of the program.

May I bring children to Family Orientation?

Parents are encouraged not to bring children. Please be advised that there are no babysitting accommodations.

Are there disability Services/Accommodations during Family Orientation and Freshman Orientation?

If students or parents/guardians would like to request accommodations for disabilities, please note this on the Family Orientation registration.
