Subject: Strategic Plan Progress Report
Implementation of NJIT's Strategic Plan for 2004-2010 has been underway for almost two years. In any planning and implementation process, it is important to assess progress along the way, take stock of what has been accomplished, what needs to be done to accomplish objectives, and what adjustments need to be made.
Working from the Strategic Plan Strategic Objectives and Tactics, the planning Steering Committee developed recently a set of metrics to form an Assessment Report, a quantitative assessment of progress. In addition, the Steering Committee developed a Balanced Scorecard, as described in the document that provided the framework for our strategic planning approach, "ViSTa-A Strategic Planning Process for NJIT: Vision-Strategy-Tactics," that "rolls up" the quantitative assessment into a qualitative assessment of progress that can be understood at a glance and gives a visual description, through a traffic light scoring system, of what is going well and where efforts need to focus.
We plan to assess progress approximately once a year, in the fall, and the first Assessment Report and Balanced Scorecard, completed by the Steering Committee, can be found at
Please review the plan assessment. You should find it an interesting report that reflects changes and changes underway on campus. It also points out to us some of the work we need to accomplish to achieve the goals and reach the vision of "A preeminent technological research university known for innovation, entrepreneurship, and engagement" at "The Edge in Knowledge." Congratulations, and thanks, to a great many of you who were and will continue to be instrumental in our progress.
