Howard S. Kimmel, PhD


Howard S. Kimmel, PhD

Howard S. Kimmel, PhD is a professor in the department of chemical engineering and executive director of the Center for Pre-College Programs (CPCP) at New Jersey Institute of Technology. His research interests include: assessment of student learning; linking learning objectives with student outcomes; implementation and assessment of standards-based lesson planning; problems and challenges faced by teachers in the adaptation of engineering applications in a standards-based instructional environment; and the appropriate use of technology in the support of teaching and learning.

Kimmel has been a leader in the area of pre-college programs from the inception of the Center in 1979. He has directed in-service training programs for pre-college teachers for more than 30 years and is responsible for all professional development, curriculum efforts, assessment, and outreach programs operated under the auspices of CPCP.

Recent publications include: “Using a Problem Solving Heuristic to Teach Engineering Graphics,” International Journal of Mechanical Engineering Education, 32 (2), 135-146 2004; “Implementing Pre-Engineering Curricula in High School Science and Mathematics,” Proceedings of the 35th ASEE/IEEE Frontiers in Education Conference, Indianapolis, IN, October 2005; and “Bringing Engineering into K-12 Schools: A Problem Looking for Solutions?,” Proceedings of the 2006 ASEE Annual Conference, Chicago, IL, June 2006.

He received his PhD from the City University of New York; his MS from West Virginia University; and his BS from Brooklyn College.
