Gordon A. Lewandowski, PhD, distinguished professor of chemical engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology, is working with National Science Foundation funding to develop engineering tools that more accurately predict the path of a contaminant plume. His work will ensure that drinking water wells are safe, even when lying in the path of a contamination source. The research is a collaborative effort with faculty at Johns Hopkins University and the Institut National des Sciences Appliques in Lyon, France. He has also developed methods for treating hazardous waste using aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and fungi, as well as computer-programmed sequencing batch reactors. Lewandowski received the Harlan J. Perlis Award for Research in 1990 for his role at NJIT in advancing research and scientific investigation. The award is named after a late NJIT professor who also was an outstanding researcher. Recent publications include: “Estimation of Anaerobic Biodegradation Rate Constants at MGP Sites”, Ground Water, 42, 433-437 (2004); and “Comparison of Various Measures of Microbial Growth Kinetics in Suspended and Biofilm Cultures During Biodegradation of Naphthalene,” Water Environ. Res., 74, 272-279 (2002). He received his EngScD from Columbia University and his MS and BS degrees from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. |
