Kamalesh Sirkar, PhD

Kamalesh K. Sirkar, PhD, is a distinguished professor of chemical engineering and the sponsored chair for membrane separations and the director for the Center for Membrane Technologies at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Sirkar has received a number of awards and honorary degrees, and is an internationally renowned expert in membrane separation technologies, some of which are being increasingly employed for water purification as well as desalination. He has also studied industrial uses of water and how industries might recycle wastewater.

Sirkar recently was selected as the first recipient of the Themis Medicare Chemcon Distinguished Speaker Award, which he received during an international symposium on challenges for chemical engineering in Chennai, India. The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers sponsored the honor; he also was inducted as an honorary fellow of the same organization.

Sirkar is a co-editor of the widely used Membrane Handbook (Chapman and Hall Publishers, NY,1992). He has authored 162 publications and holds 19 U.S. patents.  A noted expert in his field, Sirkar’s research has most recently been published in: Industrial and Engineeering Chemistry Research; Journal of Membrane Science; Polymer; Biotechnology Progress; Journal of American Chemical Society; and Journal of Controlled Release.

Sirkar graduated with a bachelor’s degree with honors in 1963 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India.  He received his master’s degree in 1966 and his PhD in 1969 from the University of Illinois, Urbana.
