William C. Van Buskirk, PhD, PE is a distinguished professor and Foundation professor in the department of biomedical engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology. He previously served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. His research interests are in the field of biomechanics and he has made significant contributions to the fields of vestibular mechanics and bone mechanics. Prior to his appointment to NJIT, Van Buskirk held the position of Alden J. Laborde Professor and Dean of the School of Engineering at Tulane University. He joined Tulane’s faculty in 1970 as an instructor of biomechanics in the School of Medicine. He transferred to the engineering faculty in 1971. Van Buskirk founded the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Tulane and became its first department head in 1977; he served in that capacity until he was appointed dean in 1991. Van Buskirk was named Dow Outstanding Young Faculty member by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) in 1974. In 1981, he received the Tulane School of Engineering’s Excellence in Teaching Award. In 1986, the ASEE gave him its Outstanding Biomedical Engineering Educator Award. In 1985, he was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and in 1994, he was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. He received his BS in engineering science from the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, and his MS and PhD in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from Stanford University. |
