NJIT - PublicInfo: NJIT Excellence in Research Medal Note: Each college/school will establish a research award valued at $2,500 and paid from the NJIT Foundation. Annually these recipients, would constitute the slate of nominees considered for the NJIT Medal valued at $10,000 and paid from the NJIT Foundation. The Medal selection committee will be formed as: The BOO Chair and two other BOO members, the Senior VP for R&D, and the provost. The committee will also include at least one external person of stature as determined by the Chair of the BOO. ? The Medal is awarded in recognition of a sustained record of contributions that has enhanced the reputation of NJIT. The Medal winner will deliver a lecture based on this record of accomplishment, and the lecture will be webcast and recorded on CD for distribution. ? The Medal winner must have been a member of the NJIT faculty for at least 5 years. ? Criteria for the Medal are the following: o A sustained record of research sponsorship, appropriate to discipline ? Evaluation to extend over a period of at least 5 years at NJIT ? Funding from multiple sources, at least some of which involve peer-review processes o A sustained record of scholarly activity ? Evaluation to extend over a period of at least 5 years at NJIT ? Including peer-reviewed journal articles, patents and related accomplishments ? Other evidence of successful contribution, including identification of students and theses/dissertations that have received awards, and students that have achieved career success o Research contributions that are nationally and internationally recognized ? Evaluation to extend over a period of at least 5 years at NJIT ? Widely-cited publications, success in technology transfer, or patents that lead to noteworthy products ? External letters of support from recognized leaders in the research field(s) ? National/international acknowledgement (e.g., through awards, prizes, and appointments) ? The NJIT Excellence in Research Award need not be given every year. NJIT Excellence in Service Award(s) Note: Each college/school may establish a service award, but the Office of the Provost will solicit nominations from the broad university community. Up to two NJIT Excellence in Service Awards may be given in any year, and each award is valued at $2,500 and paid from the NJIT Foundation. ? The award is presented in recognition of a sustained record of contributions that have enhanced the reputation of NJIT. Up to two awards may be given annually, one focused on service within the NJIT community, and one focused on service and activities extending beyond the NJIT community. ? An awardee must have been a member of the NJIT faculty or a member of the NJIT staff (academic or non-academic) for at least 5 years. ? The award acknowledges a sustained record of service over a period of at least 5 years. ? The award acknowledges contributions that are above and beyond those that would be normally expected of someone holding the candidate’s position at the university. The contributions should be integral to the successful fulfillment of the university’s mission of service. ? Criteria for the NJIT Excellence in Service Award are the following: o If the award is for service to the NJIT community, ? A sustained record of contributions that have enabled individuals and organizations in the university community to achieve excellence. ? Contributions that are recognized across a broad cross-section of the university community, and the nomination should include letters of support from several different units within the university o If the award is primarily for service and activities extending beyond the NJIT community, ? A sustained record of external contributions that have been successful in elevating the stature of NJIT. ? Contributions that have received positive recognition, and the nomination should include external letters of support from recognized leaders and/or organizations. ? NJIT Kicks Off Women Faculty Partnership Seminar Series

Nancy Steffen-Fluhr, PhD, director of The Murray Center for Women in Technology at NJIT, provided an overview of NJIT’s National Science Foundation-funded ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Grant at the first in a series of partnership seminars on Nov. 15 in Eberhardt Hall. The grant initiative, which is part of NJIT’s Strategic Plan commitment to enhanced faculty diversity, positions the university as a leader among peer institutions in the national effort to advance women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
