Marino Xanthos, PhD

Marino Xanthos, PhD

The complex and intricate world of plastics comes alive through the eyes of Marino Xanthos, PhD, a professor in the department of chemical engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology. His research interests focus on polymer blends/composites/foams; polymer modification and polymer reactive processing; plastics recycling and life-cycle assessment; polymer processing /structure/ property relationships; environmental considerations in polymer processing; smart polymeric materials; and composites for biomedical applications.

From 1988-2005, Xanthos served as director of research at the Polymer Processing Institute (PPI), an independent non-profit research organization located at NJIT. He directed the Polymer Engineering Center at NJIT from 1995-2003. He has been manager of research and development and technical services at Marietta Resources International Ltd. and taught at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken.

In 2003, Xanthos was named a Fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE). Although more than 25,000 members belong to SPE, only 210 of them have been elected to the status of Fellow since the honor was established in 1984. Xanthos, a member since 1985, was elected not only for his research in polymer modification, but for helping this branch of chemical engineering, known as polymer engineering, advance as an academic discipline.

The newest book edited and co-authored by Xanthos, Functional Fillers for Plastics (Wiley VCH, 2005) details not only the basics of the composition of plastics and how to alter, and then apply them, but how to fill them and modify them.

Xanthos received his doctoral and master’s degrees from the University of Toronto and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Thessaloniki, Greece.
