| New Jersey Institute of Technology Receives $65,000 Grant from the Beaumont Foundation of America |

NEWARK, Nov. 30
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will receive 30 laptop computers courtesy of the Beaumont Foundation of America, which has awarded the university a technology grant valued at $65,000.
The Toshiba laptop computers are dedicated for use by two programs at NJIT – the Student Support Services Program and The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program – both of which help low-income students, underrepresented students or students who are the first in their families to attend college. More than 200 NJIT students participate in the two programs.
“The grant is fantastic and will be a real boon to our students,” said Kathleen Hoffman, director of the Student Support Services Program at NJIT. “Right now, we have three laptops, always in demand, always booked out. Now that we’ll have 30 laptops between the two programs, it will be much better for our students.”
The grant will also pay for two laser printers, two digital cameras, and other computer support equipment, Hoffman added.
The Beaumont Foundation of America, based in Beaumont, Texas, gives technology grants to non-profit groups, libraries and schools or universities that help introduce technological skills to low-income students. This fall, the NJIT grant was among 400 grants awarded by the foundation.
“We are excited about our 2004 grantees,” said Frank Newton, president of the Beaumont Foundation of America. “We selected exceptional organizations and schools, such as NJIT, with the knowledge that they will join us in furthering the mission of providing access to technology to the underprivileged.”
